Study in New Zealand's oldest university town

The University of Otago is the oldest university in New Zealand, and the only university in the country where 85% of the Kiwi students are from outside Dunedin. Most students are housed on the streets within a mile radius of the campus, making for a warm and socially vibrant student community. Everyone makes friends at Otago.

Dunedin is perched near the end of the South Island with penguin colonies and seals on nearby shores. It is within easy reach of the Lord of the Rings scenery of Central Otago which is much favored by hikers and skiers.

Otago students take advantage of the plethora of courses in the sciences and humanities. Favored subject areas include geology, environmental science, marine science, exercise science, neuroscience and psychology in the sciences. And philosophy, religious studies, theatre studies, Māori studies, education, film and media studies, and anthropology and archeology in the arts and humanities. Many science courses use the environment around Otago as their laboratory and involve a field study component creating opportunities to get out and experience the real New Zealand. Regardless of the courses you choose, you can expect to look at the world in new ways.

Being able to leave my comfort zone at home and school to travel and study in New Zealand was an invaluable experience. I loved every second of studying abroad, and by the end of my time there, New Zealand truly felt like home. ”
