Alliance for Global Education Xi'an Program Added as Critical Languages Scholarship Site

Xi'anThe U.S. Department of State's Critical Languages Scholarship (CLS) program is part of an effort to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages.

The CLS program is a program of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). The CLS program is administered by American Councils for International Education and the Council of American Overseas Research Centers.

The Alliance for Global Education has been selected by American Councils for International Education and the State Department to host all three program sites in China, adding Xi’an as a third site for CLS in addition to the Alliance’s CLS institutes in Beijing and Shanghai.

Students who are awarded the full scholarship will study intensive Chinese during summer 2011 in Beijing (Beijing Language and Culture University), Shanghai (Shanghai University of Finance and Economics), or Xi’an (Shaanxi Normal University).Classes will be offered at the intermediate or advanced level.

During the 8-week program, students will enroll in 20 hours per week of intensive Chinese language, live with Chinese roommates (Shanghai and Xi’an) or host families (Beijing), have a peer language tutor, and participate in organized activities and excursions that support language acquisition and cultural understanding.

All program fees, round-trip air travel, meals, activities and excursions are covered by the CLS scholarship. The Alliance will host all eighty scholarships recipients across the Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi’an sites. For more information about the CLS program, please visit:
