Program

The Arcadia University Center for Latin American Studies was established in direct collaboration with the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso. Founded in 1928, with a tradition of academic excellence, now serves over 14,000 students and is one of the most forward-looking and international universities in Latin America.

Students will have the opportunity to discover what global means in a Latin American and Chilean context, in two courses, one on Globalization and Social Justice and the other as a Valparaíso UNESCO World Heritage Site: Local Art in Global Boundaries. Valparaíso is the classroom, and students will engage in the university and the community, from the university to Valparaíso, Santiago and surrounding areas.

In addition to the courses, taught in English, students will be involved in a wide variety of co- and extra-curricular activities. Full immersion is enhanced by homestay housing for all students.

Courses

Globalization and Social Justice
(view complete syllabus)
Chile and Latin America are a paradoxical test case for the uneasy relationship between globalization and social justice, as well as how socio-economic forces affect this relationship. The course  specifically examines poverty and inequality in Latin-America with particular references to Chile in a global context.

Themes treated during the course include: the capitalist world economy; conventional and critical theories of the globalization process; the liberalization of trade and trade integration; income distribution; and democratic and non-democratic regimes. A combination of lectures, presentations by guest lecturers from various sectors; and field visits to business and labor establishments provide students with a comprehensive view of the topic in context.

Valparaíso UNESCO World Heritage Site: Local Art in Global Boundaries
(view complete syllabus)
What makes a city deep in the South Pacific have the outstanding universal values to be considered a World Heritage Site? What is the origin and destination of Valparaiso? What are the heritage places in Valparaíso? How can the city build its global presence from local margins? These questions are an invitation to discover the city of Valparaíso and Chile in its modes of representation through contemporary art and cultural practices.

The course combines workshops, lectures and fieldwork, and takes the student on a journey through the city of Valparaíso using art as a guide. This is an interdisciplinary program incorporating elements of anthropology, visual culture, literature, art history, design and urban heritage.  All faculty are drawn from PUCV’s renowned School of Architecture and Design and Art Institute.

Housing

All students will be housed in home stays with local Chilean families.  The homestays are either in neighborhoods of Valparaiso (old city) or Viña del Mar. Most homes are a 15-20 minute commute by bus or Metro to the academic campus. Only one student is assigned per house; students have single bedrooms, are provided 3 meals per day, provided laundry service and all homes have internet connections. Accommodations for non-Spanish speaking students can be provided with families that have a basic proficiency in English.

Viña del Mar reflects its aristocratic past and present, the gardens and beaches bustle with modernity in a city that calls itself “Viña - Beautiful City."

Valparaiso offers the charm and magic of its hills, historic quarter with heritage interest, and local color of its bohemian scene.
