UCL Course Registration

Courses and Credits

UCL courses available to study abroad students are listed on the university website.

Study Abroad students should enroll for courses according to the following guidelines:

  • Autumn or Spring Semester students should take a total of 2 units, or 16 US credits.
  • Academic Year students should choose a total of 32 US credits for the academic year.

Important Notes

  • The UCL academic year is divided into two 12-week terms followed by a 6-week term during which examinations take place. 
  • Students applying through The College of Global Studies may enroll for the autumn term, or the spring and summer terms combined, or the full academic year.
  • You should secure approval for at least 8-10 courses per semester.
  • Make sure to list at least one alternate course for every course you select.
  • List your choices and alternates in order of preference.
  • Supplemental course fees may apply - see below.
  • University College London does not pre-register any students for any classes. UCL records your class requests upon application but you will register for classes only when you arrive on campus.

It is your responsibility to make sure that the courses you take abroad will transfer for credit to your home school. Please review your course choices with your academic or study abroad advisor, and submit the online course registration form to The College of Global Studies at Arcadia University.

Every effort will be made to place you in the courses you request. However, neither UCL nor The College of Global Studies cannot guarantee placement in any course. Your first choices may not be available due to schedule changes, time conflicts or cancellations. Alternate course approval and flexibility is extremely important.


Admitting Departments

Each UCL student is accepted into one or two departments as their admitting department. This is considered your main area of study for administrative purposes.

  • If admitted to one department only, students are required to take 50% (2) of their classes in that department.

  • If admitted to two departments, students must take 50% of their classes in the first admitting department and at least one class in the secondary admitting department.

Third and/or fourth classes may be selected from other departments (exceptions noted below).

Students should plan to apply to one department only and list one alternate department for admission. Only students that have very specific academic needs should submit their application to two different departments. Talk to your program manager if you have questions about this.

The general GPA requirement admission for most UCL departments is 3.3. However, certain departments are stricter and often require higher GPAs for admission.

  • Students applying to the History, English, Biomedical Sciences, or Psychology departments are advised that a GPA of 3.4 or above is recommended.

  • Students applying to the Economics, or Mathematics departments should have a GPA of at least 3.5.
Important Note
Students who are enrolled in a Band 2 department as their sole or primary admitting department will be assessed a special course fee. Please see below for more details regarding special course fees.


Departmental Notes


Please read these notes carefully if you are planning to apply to any of the following departments.

English Department

  • Students who have not applied to the English department cannot take English classes.
  • Students who have been accepted into the English department only must take all four courses within the English department. 
  • Students who are accepted to English and one other department only enroll will take two courses in English.
  • Students who are interested in literature classes but cannot apply to English should consider European Cultural Studies or area studies departments as good alternatives.


  • Students who have not been accepted into the Economics department will be limited to classes at the 1000-level (Level 1).
  • Students who wish to enroll in 2000- or 3000- level economics courses will need to apply to the Economics department either as a primary or secondary admitting department.
  • Students who wish to take higher Economics classes but who are not enrolled in the Economics department can also find upper-level Economics classes in the Slavonic and East European Studies department.

History of Art

  • Level 1 Courses numbered HART1401-1701 are open to students who are not History of Art majors. Students are permitted to take one of these courses per semester and may not be admitted to the History of Art department by requesting these courses.
  • All other History of Art courses are only open to students who are majoring or minoring in History of Art and who are accepted into the History of Art department.

Management Science and Innovation

  • Management Science and Innovation is only available as an admitting department for the full academic year and for the spring semester. The MSIN department does not admit students for fall only, though certain classes may be available to Fall Semester students enrolled in other departments.


  • Mathematics is  is only available as an admitting department for the full academic year and for the spring semester. The Mathematics department does not admit students for fall only, though certain classes may be available to Fall Semester students enrolled in other departments.
  • Students who wish to take 3000- level courses in the Mathematics department are advised to carefully check the prerequisites for each class. They are taught at an advanced level and generally require at least three prerequisite college-level mathematics classes. Contact your Program Manager with questions.
  • Classes at the 4000-level are graduate level courses and will only be offered on a case-by-case basis to study abroad students who can demonstrate extensive backgrounds in high-level undergraduate mathematics classes.

 Slade School of Art

  • Students who are enrolled at the Slade School of Art must take all their courses within that department. No cross-registration is possible.
  • Three concentrations are available: Painting, Sculpture, and Fine Art Media (including photography, print, film, video, sound, and electronic media). You must choose one.
  • Students who apply to the Slade School of Art must submit a portfolio of at least 15 non-returnable slides of recent art work. The portfolio may be in the form of a CD, slides, printed matter, or a DVD.
  • Students who wish to study at the Slade School of Art must choose to specialize in painting, sculpture, or fine art media, and should note their area of focus on the course selection form.

 Language Courses

  •  Language courses can be offered for credit to academic-year students only.


Special Course Fees

Some British universities, including UCL, divide their academic departments into 2 different fee bands. Band 2 departments are usually science and engineering departments, and the extra fee is due to the costs of labs and specialized equipment and facilities.

Additionally, some specific courses with built-in field excursions may have separately-billed course fees. (Examples of this may include archaeology courses with  integrated excavations or earth science courses with integrated fieldwork.) Please carefully read the course descriptions if you are taking one of these courses, and contact your program manager if you have questions. These fees may be billed in addition to any departmental supplemental course fees which may apply.

Students will be charged Band 2 fees if they are enrolled in a Band 2 department as their sole department of admission, or in the case of students enrolled in two departments, as their first or primary department of admission.

For example:

  • If a student enrolls in the Psychology department only, Band 2 fees apply.
  • If a student is admitted to Psychology as his or her primary department and Economics as the secondary department, Band 2 fees apply.
  • If a student is admitted to Economics as his or her primary department and Psychology as the secondary department, Band 2 fees do not apply.
  • Band 2 fees also do not apply for students enrolled solely in Band 1 departments who take Band 2 courses on an ad-hoc basis.

Band 2 additional fees will be added to student accounts after registration at UCL takes place.

Band 2 fee billing may differ for students from home schools with direct billing arrangements. Contact your program manager if you have questions.

These departments are subject to change; contact your program manager if you have specific questions. However, you should assume that all science and engineering-related subjects, plus Anthropology, Archaeology, Fine Art, Geography, and Psychology will be Band 2.
