About Macquarie University
Macquarie University is an ideal choice for students who wish to have access to the city but prefer to live in a quieter residential setting. The campus is adjacent to a major shopping center with its cinemas, department stores, cafes and restaurants. All the cultural and nightlife attractions of Sydney's downtown area are accessible by public transport originating on campus, with an average journey taking approximately 45 minutes.
With its comprehensive course offerings, Macquarie offers several unique options for study abroad students. You will have the opportunity to study subjects as varied as Egyptology, religion, accounting, and linguistics. You'll take three or four courses per semester. The only courses which are not opened to study abroad students are in the Faculties of Law and Medicine, media production courses, and a number of criminology courses.
The University enjoys a parkland setting distinguished by broad, open lawns and native landscaping that make this one of the most Australian campuses in the nation. There is even a marsupial research station on site with extensive populations of wallabies and other native fauna. You can expect to find many of the services that you require in the Campus Hub building which houses, amongst other things, a bookshop, travel agent, pharmacy, bar, eateries and a performance space for concerts and other social functions. In total, around 26,000 students attend Macquarie and its 6,000 international students include many from Norway, Sweden, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and from many Asian countries.
With over 200 clubs and societies, Macquarie University offers a wide range of activities including many sporting pursuits and cultural and social events. The nearby ice rink is the training venue for the ice hockey team while golfers can utilize the golf range on campus. This centralised campus also provides gym facilities and a major sports center. Newly arrived study abroad students may wish to take advantage of complimentary social activities or join the exchange club which pairs in-coming international students with students who have recently been abroad.
