About the Glasgow School of Art
The Glasgow School of Art is composed of three schools - the School of Design, the School of Fine Art, and the Mackintosh School of Architecture, along with the Department of Historical and Critical Studies, which provides foundation courses in art and design.
The School's main campus is located one block from Sauchiehall Street (a major shopping venue) in the center of Glasgow, in a purpose built facility designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The school's Digital Design Center is located in another Mackintosh building - known as the "Building for Art Lovers." Mackintosh was a leading Scottish architect in the late 19th century, an alumnus of the school, and an early pioneer of the art nouveau movement. Everything from the chairs to the light fixtures in the GSA has been designed and beautifully executed, creating an inspiring environment in which to pursue your studies.
Your practical studies will be integrated with foundation courses designed with the goal of producing a mature and adult practitioner. The GSA first establishes and fosters a core artistic foundation and then encourages you to focus on a particular area of interest. Subjects you can select from include: architecture, environmental art, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, visual communication, embroidered and woven textiles, printed and knitted textiles, ceramic design, interior design, product design, silversmithing, jewelry and product design engineering.
Typically, you will take all of your studio courses in the subject area in which you are accepted. A full-time course load normally includes four days of specialist study in art and design and one day of historical and critical studies. You will select courses in conjunction with departmental tutors to ensure that you enroll in classes at a level appropriate for you. You will be encouraged to develop your own distinctive vision through focused studio work and independent projects.
Architectural studies are offered through the Mackintosh School of Architecture. The Mackintosh School is a department of both the University of Glasgow and the Glasgow School of Art. The architectural option is open to all applicants, but due to the rigors of the curriculum, courses must be selected from first- or second-level offerings. Additionally, full-year study is recommended for architectural coursework.
A color portfolio that includes 10-15 slides must be submitted as part of the application process. Since your slides cannot be returned, it is best to submit copies.
