About Goldsmiths, University of London
An institution where theory is combined with practice, Goldsmiths has established itself as a dominant presence in the study of the creative and cultural processes that influence the arts, media and communications. With one of the largest music departments in Great Britain and internationally renowned programs in drama and theater, it is a favorite center of learning for young British artists.
A full-time course load generally includes four courses. Depending on your curriculum, you may attend lectures, seminar groups and/or tutorials, workshops, studios or laboratories. In Britain, students are expected to do quite a bit of independent study outside of class. This means that while you may have fewer in-class hours than you would ordinarily have at home, your workload will remain just as comprehensive. You'll need to manage your time wisely to ensure that you complete all outside reading and assignments.
For your convenience, the University operates open access computer facilities where you'll find PC or MAC computers for use. Additionally, you'll be given access to e-mail and the Internet. You are guaranteed housing at Goldsmiths. The University's Halls of Residence, which are self-catering, are situated in southeast London within a three-mile radius of the campus.
There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in campus student life. Typically this revolves around the Student’s Union and getting involved in any or all of the planned activities or joining one of the many clubs and societies. The College hosts a continuous schedule of on-campus entertainment from live music to clubs and comedy nights.
To accommodate your fitness and sporting interests, you'll find track and field facilities, outdoor tennis courts, and nearby sports grounds you can use for football, cricket, rugby, or hockey. You'll also have use of a nearby swimming pool and leisure complex located several blocks from the campus.
Since Goldsmiths is a constituent college of the federal University of London system, you will be welcome to use the University of London Student’s Union located in central London. In addition to bars, restaurants and an entertainment venue that attracts major bands and comedy acts, you'll find the Union equipped with shops, a fitness center and weights room, health spa, squash and badminton courts, and swimming pool. The London Student’s Union makes a great base of operations from which to explore the heart of the City.
