About Lancaster University
A full-time course load generally includes three to five courses. You can choose courses from among several departments or concentrate in a single academic field. Additionally, internships and fieldwork assignments can sometimes be arranged for full-year or spring two-term students. Each department assigns an academic advisor for North American students to help ease your academic transition and advise on your studies.
Additional academic offerings are the three pre-session courses offered before the start of the fall semester: This Scepter’d Isle: Aspects of British History and Culture, Changing Places – Lancaster and the Lake District, and The World About Us: Explorations in the History, Principles and Applications of Science. The programs include weekly classes and supplemental field-study excursions to sites of cultural and historical interest. Academic progress is assessed through several essays and a short examination. Your program manager can provide more information about Lancaster pre-sessions.
If you are a full-year or fall-term student, you'll be housed in one of the eight University Colleges. If possible, January-entry students are also assigned housing on campus. Most rooms are singles, and the majority of students prepare their own meals in shared kitchens. When you don't feel like cooking, you'll find a wide variety of inexpensive dining halls, cafeterias, and snack bars on campus. Arcadia University guarantees your accommodation and handles these arrangements for you.
Far more than just a place to crash at night, the residential colleges form the backbone of student’s activities and social life when not in the classroom. The University sponsors a wide range of student clubs and societies that you can join. You'll also have the opportunity to join any of 36 sports clubs, as well as participate in recreational and fitness classes such as circuit training, yoga, squash, aerobics, dance and tennis. Among the many outdoor athletic facilities, you'll find football, rugby and hockey pitches, tennis courts, an area for golf driving and marked jogging routes that intersect the campus and extend into the surrounding countryside.
On the campus you will find snack-bars and shops, supermarkets and a bakery, a pharmacy, banks and a post office. The sports amenities include an indoor 25-meter swimming pool, fully equipped weight rooms, a fitness studio, sauna and solarium, rock climbing wall, and facilities to accommodate dance, judo, karate, basketball, hockey, tennis, football and volleyball.
Each week, there are major musical artists performing on campus, as well as numerous lunchtime concerts that feature student soloists and ensembles. Lancaster’s Nuffield Theatre, one of the finest studio theaters in the United Kingdom, focuses on new and experimental works in theater and dance. The University's Peter Scott Gallery with its strong modern art focus regularly mounts changing exhibits of contemporary sculpture, photography, crafts, painting and drawing.
