About the Victorian College of the Arts and Music
Recognized as a world leader in the studio and performing arts, the Victorian College of the Arts and Music, is a faculty within the University of Melbourne and offers a special experience for students interested in spending a semester or year focusing solely on one or two subject areas in the arts (students are generally not able to cross-enroll in classes at the University of Melbourne and the VCA and Music). Enhancing the classroom experience is the compact campus located in the heart of Melbourne's cultural district. You'll find that the classroom merges into the art world, with instructors as working professionals and visiting lecturers coming throughout the semester.
With Schools of Art, Dance, Music and Production, and a Center for Ideas, you'll have plenty of options for study. You'll take one major course in your primary field of study (drawing, painting, music performance, etc.) for eight to twelve credits, and complement that with a course in the Center for Ideas as well as elective courses. The Center for Ideas offers courses for students across all areas of study and courses are designed to encourage students to consider artistic questions within larger social, political and cultural contexts.
While the campus and student body are small, the vibrancy of a college where everyone is interested in the fine and performing arts is what makes VCA and Music such a wonderful study abroad option. You may not find all the student clubs and societies or the recreational facilities of a larger university, but you'll have your own studio or rehearsal space, and you'll find that you'll spend a lot of time studying and working with Australians who have similar interests to you. VCA and Music students have complete access to clubs, societies and services provided by the University of Melbourne.
