Arcadia London Parliamentary Internship
- The Arcadia London Parliamentary Internship offers an in-depth insight into the evolution of British politics.
- It is an unparalleled opportunity to play a part in the day-to-day running of a UK Parliamentary office.
- Parliamentary placements are also available during the summer internship program.
As the political center of the United Kingdom, London has always been the most exciting place to observe the evolution of British politics. As a Parliamentary intern, you will contribute to the everyday operations of important figures in British politics. You will also develop an insider’s understanding of how the British legislature – the House of Commons and the House of Lords – makes policy ideas into law.
The work of a Parliamentary intern involves a wide variety of tasks, including research, writing speeches, preparing briefings, responding to letters and addressing the needs of the electorate. The work of an intern might also include attendance of meetings, conferences, events and special sessions of the Standing and Select Committees. Many interns visit their MP’s constituency – this will introduce you to other areas of the UK and allow you to learn about the area you represent in your MP’s London office.
In addition to your 3-day-a-week internship placement and academic coursework you will also write a substantial paper or complete an independent project. The project should demonstrate resourcefulness, independent thought, an understanding of the issues confronting your particular industry or profession and a mature work ethic.
While our Parliamentary internship program is not for the timid and will require good time management skills, the chance to work and study in London provides one of the best study abroad experiences available.
You will earn the following hours of credit.
- Fall semester: 14-18 credits.
- Spring semester: 14-18 credits.
- Summer session: 6 credits.
GPA Requirements: A 3.2 or better on a 4.0 scale is required for Parliamentary internship placements. (A 3.0 GPA is required for placements in most other fields, with the exception of finance and banking placements, which require a 3.5 GPA.) A supplementary questionnaire will also be required for all students pursuing a parliamentary placement. Contact your Program Manager for further information.
