2013 Summer Creative Writing Institute
One Weekend, Plus Four Weeks Online

Online workshops and exercises: July 29 - August 23
- Arcadia University offers three creative writing workshops over the summer, and no matter what writing experience you have, there’s one to help you improve your work.
- Each workshop consists of one weekend on campus, July 26 -28, followed by four weeks of online learning.
- Participants in each workshop will attend a literary event on July 26.
- Each course can be taken at either the undergraduate (4 credits) or graduate (3 credits) level.
- Tuition is $899 for each program within the institute.
- Rising high school juniors and seniors are eligible for the Introductory Workshop only. High school students accepted to the course must have an approval form signed by their guidance counselor or principal and returned to Arcadia before the course begins.

Intermediate Fiction & Poetry Workshop
This course is for intermediate to advanced creative writers who want to hone their skills over four weeks of discussion and workshops. Students will get personal feedback from Arcadia’s creative writing faculty and their peers during both the weekend on campus and four weeks of online workshops. Students will work on their fiction, poetry, or non-fiction in this workshop, and will both compose and revise pieces with an eye towards putting together a refined portfolio at the end of the course.
Eligibility and Requirements
- Students must be university level juniors, seniors or graduates as of the Fall of 2013, and have taken an introductory creative writing course—which includes a workshop—at their school.
- Students new to Arcadia may be expected to submit two pages of writing (poetry or prose) with their application, at the faculty member’s request.
- Enrolled students will submit three pages of writing before the course begins. This writing will be used for in-person workshops on July 27 and 28.
- Students will be expected to consistently participate in online workshops for all four weeks after the in-person meetings, during which students will have the opportunity to develop more of their writing.
- At the end of the course, all participants will be expected to hand in 10-15 page portfolio of refined work.
Intermediate Children’s & Y.A. Workshop
This workshop is for students with some experience in writing for children or YA audiences who want to further their writing skills and knowledge of this important publishing market. The goal is to have students get closer to the production of publishable children’s fiction, nonfiction, or poetry. In one intensive weekend, plus four weeks online, students will experience craft and creativity workshops, intensive peer review, and one-on-one conferencing with their instructor. Reflective reading and writing will aid students in developing their own style and voice. The emphasis will be on the student’s own work-in-progress, as well as on the publishing process.
Eligibility and Requirements
- Students must have some experience writing for children or YA audiences, either from having taken EN343/443 (Introduction to Writing for Children) at Arcadia, a similar course at another university, or equivalent experience as demonstrated by a writing sample.
- Reading and responding to works on writing theory
- Enrolled students will submit three pages of writing before the course begins. This writing will be used for in-person workshops on July 27 and 28.
- Production of a polished picture book manuscript (for picture book writers), or a 7 to 15 page manuscript for middle grade or YA writers
- In addition, graduate students must lead one class online discussion group.
Introductory Fiction & Poetry Workshop
This course is for writers who are just getting started in the workshop environment, whether the writer has been writing on their own for some time or wants to try to write for the first time. The fundamentals of fiction and poetry, and also some instruction on creative non-fiction and young adult fiction, will be covered in this section. Writers will also read some literary works that correspond with lessons. Students will get personal feedback from Arcadia’s Creative Writing faculty and their peers during both the weekend on campus and the four weeks of online workshops and discussion.

- Anyone looking to get experience in the creative writing workshop setting, including undergraduates, graduates, and high school students (rising juniors and seniors only).
- Students registered for this workshop will submit two pages of writing, poetry or prose, three weeks before the course begins. It will be used for in-person workshops on July 27 and 28.
- Students will be expected to consistently participate in online workshops for all four weeks after the in-person meetings, during which students will have the opportunity to develop more of their writing.
- At the end of the course, all participants will be expected to hand in 7-10 page portfolio of refined work.
How to Register
Pre-Registration
Complete the Creative Writing Institute Registration Questionnaire. This brief questionnaire is to ensure that you have some experience in creative writing classes and will therefore be able to actively and effectively participate in the workshops for the Creative Writing Summer Institute. Students new to Arcadia will be asked to submit samples of their writing following review of this questionnaire. Once submitted, your registration request will be reviewed. Expect a response within two weeks.
Registration
If you have been accepted to the program, you will be automatically registered for the course. Whether you have been accepted or not to the Institute, you will be notified by Professor Josh Isard. You will receive, via e-mail, additional details regarding the on-campus weekend, the online component and payment options before the course begins.
