Get a Firsthand Look at Protection, Enforcement and the Courts
This graduate-level course—offered at Arcadia University’s campus in Arusha, Tanzania—examines contemporary International Human Rights Law in Africa, with a special focus on East African region. The Nyerere Centre for Peace Research is jointly operated by Arcadia University and the multi-nation East African Community (EAC) and provides an ideal local for the study of the following:
- Human rights instruments
- Institutions for promotion and enforcement
- International criminal law perspectives as a special enforcement regime
This 4-credit course provides a unique learning experience for the graduate student studying international law, human rights, international diplomacy and conflict resolution. The goal of the course is to provide a rigorous academic program with a focus on human rights in Africa today. It will draw on regional assets and include guest speakers and visits to international legal bodies located in Arusha, namely the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (UNICTR), the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the East African Community, including its Court of Justice.
This course is jointly offered by the master’s program in International Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) at Arcadia University and the African Foundation for International Law. Students earn 4 Arcadia University graduate credits, and transcripts are available for visiting graduate students.

- Research paper: The final paper is due during the first week of August. The final grade is determined by participation (25 percent), the paper presentation (25 percent), and the final paper (50 percent).
- Class participation: Active participation is expected. Cases and academic journal articles are assigned for reading, presentation, and discussion. Students are encouraged to be critical about the reading material and to address the questions and the cases assigned orally.

- Tuition for Course (ID581) is $2,850 (4 graduate credits)
- Tuition price includes housing. NOTE: Travel costs (airfare and entrance Visas) are the responsibility of the students although Arcadia will assist with the arrangements. Additional spending money will be needed and can range between $50 per week to $200 depending on the student's activities and personal expenses.
- Course can be applied to the International Peace and Conflict Resolution master's degree program or graduate certificate.
