Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice Faculty
Dr. Jonathan Church is an Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology. His research has focused the effects of globalization on identity formation within the Shetland Islands, constructions of gender within online gaming communities, as well as the brokering of gratitude for agency assigned emotional caregivers, buddies, to people living with HIV. He was awarded the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1998.
Dr. Ana María García is Chair and Assistant Professor of Sociology. She teaches courses related to gender and sexual orientation, sex and society, feminist theory and social inequalities. Dr. García's work investigates the theory and teaching of multiculturalism, gender, and sexualities. She was awarded the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2004.
Dr. Norman Johnston is Professor Emeritus in Sociology. A criminologist, Dr. Johnston has published 11 books in the field, several of which have been translated into other languages. He continues to be active in the field, including publishing, engaging with efforts to maintain and restore historic Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, and appearing in documentaries related to corrections.
Dr. John Noakes is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of the Criminal Justice program. His current research focuses on how police respond to political protests and on the effects of surveillance on social movement organizations and participants. He teaches introductory courses in criminal justice and sociology, as well as courses on surveillance, policing, theories of crime, and social inequality.
Mr. Alex Otieno teaches introduction to sociology, social problems, senior seminar as well as health related courses such as health and human rights, sociology of health care and sociology of AIDS. He is interested in strategies for teaching and learning theory, research and practice pertaining to social policy, globalization, sustainable development and human rights.
Dr. Dina Pinsky is an Assistant Professor in Sociology. She specializes in research methods, gender studies and social identities. Dr. Pinsky teaches introduction to sociology, research methods courses and women in society. Her research has focused on the development of Jewish identities among feminist women and men.
