Global Focus Slovenia is global learning program of Communications Program at Arcadia University
Each year, we study two media environments from around the world in our courses. This allows us to deliberately widen our scope of media study in an already globalized media world.
As a field of study and a path for career preparation, Communications is inherently imbued with global/international dimension. It is here that the idea of “global village” was invoked by Marshall McLuhan some fifty years ago. The contemporary world continues to affirm that idea through practice and reality of globalization. As we reaffirm our commitment to integrating international perspectives on campus, the communications Program is well suited to begin that task on several fronts. Our curriculum needs to reflect both its necessarily global dimension and a collective commitment to bringing to students the values and practice of global learning. Global Focus program expands the study of Communications beyond the traditional borders of nation and culture into the realm of global learning.
All relevant courses in Communications incorporate specific contexts of media practice and culture of two countries each year, one chosen in the Western world and one in the developing world. The purpose is to study different states of development in communications/media in these specific countries. The continuity provided by the focus on two specific countries in all courses creates a climate of global learning. The diversity of perspectives offered in each course (e.g. study of video and film, public relations, journalism, ownership and control issues, cross-cultural interaction, distribution of media content and independence in global media world) broadens the understanding students have of their own world. Assignments in each of these courses focus on the specific issues related to media and communications in these two countries/cultures.
Along with Slovenia, we will also study the media environment in South Africa
