English Language Institute
Placement and Advancement
Students who have taken a standardized language test within the past year should note the scores on the application form. Students will also take a placement test when they arrive on campus to ensure that they are placed in classes appropriate to their proficiency level at that time.
Initial placement into class levels is based on standardized language assessments (TOEFL, IELTS, iTEP, and Michigan) as well as structured interviews and writing assessments.
After students take ELI courses, they advance to the next level if they receive a grade of C- (70%) or higher in all their courses. Additionally, advanced level students who receive a grade of C- (70%) or higher in all courses and pass a final qualifying examination will receive a certificate of program completion.
Important: If a student does not meet the criteria for level advancement or program completion, he or she may take the same class one more time only.
