Saturday, Oct. 10

Alumni Homecoming at Fall Fest: Alumni Bike Ride to Manayunk 

Grease your gears and join Nancy Woehrle, Assistant Director of Alumni Relations, on a bike ride from Bells Mill Road in Chestnut Hill to Manayunk, along the bike path that hugs the Schuylkill River. Grab a bite to eat at the Manayunk Brewery before returning home. You will need your own bicycle and transportation. Meet at Blankley Alumni House.
Time: 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost: Money for a lunch 

Friday, Nov.13

Arcadia Theater: The Exonerated 

John Noakes, Associate Professor of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice, leads a discussion, “Contested Convictions: Exploring Claims of Actual Innocence,” that examines the criminal justice system with particular focus on the concepts of DNA evidence, false confessions, police misconduct, eyewitness testimony and other characteristics of wrongful convictions. Then watch the drama unfold as Arcadia staff and students perform in The Exonerated staged by Arcadia’s Theater Program. Gather in The Chat, lower level of the Dining Hall.
Time: Lecture at 7 p.m.; The Exonerated at 8 p.m. Cost: $10

Arcadia Theater: The Princess Rescuers by Paige Hoke ’10 

Follow the adventures of three children who are unwittingly pulled into a painting hanging in their living room. Lost in a wondrous kingdom on a quest to save the princess, the children use their own strengths, talents, and a little bit of magic to save the day. Meet in the MainStage Theater. After the show, meet the characters at a magical reception.

Holiday Tabletop Tree Arrangement 

Create your own miniature tabletop tree with long-lasting, fresh boxwood greens. Decorate it with your choice of lights, bows, garland and flowers under the guidance of floral designer Cheryl Wilks Scherbner HTR ’78. It will look beautiful through the New Year. Meet in the Castle Rose Room.

Career Lecture: What it Takes to be a CFO 

Learn what it takes both academically and personally to become a Chief Operating Officer. Explore the differences in rising to the top of a public company versus a private company, and find out how professionals can succeed in today’s economy. Ellen Wolf, Senior Vice President and CFO of American Water, will lead the workshop. Meet in the Kuch Hospitality Suite.

The Glorious Sounds of Christmas 

Refresh your holiday spirits with the sounds of sleigh bells ringing, pipers piping and drummers drumming, as the Philadelphia Orchestra fills the air with songs of Winter Wonderland. Meet at the Kimmel Center, Broad and Spruce Streets, Philadelphia.

Day of Service at Philabundance 

Join Arcadia students in the fight against hunger and malnutrition. Philabundance is the region’s largest hunger relief organization whose mission is to end hunger and malnutrition in the Delaware Valley. Our tasks for the morning will include sorting and packing canned foods. Meet at Philabundance, 3616 South Galloway Street, Philadelphia.

Career Lecture: How to Make Your Current Job the Job You Really Want 

Elizabeth Patterson '92M will offer tips on how to advance your career, including how to capitalize on your experience and how to make a name for yourself outside of your department. She will stress the importance of helping your supervisor succeed and how to take advantage of the best job training to increase your chances of landing a promotion or transfer. Meet in Kuch Hospitality Suite.

Thursday, Feb. 25

The Night Skies of Pennsylvania 

How often do you take the time to look up into the night sky? And, if you do, can you identify the constellations? Do you know when to look for a meteor shower?  Julia Plummer, Assistant Professor of Education and Coordinator of Science Education, will answer your questions and take you on a journey through the night skies of Pennsylvania. Afterwards, visit Arcadia’s observatory and take a look for yourself. Meet in Boyer Hall.

March Madness at the Mütter Museum 

The Mütter Museum holds a unique collection of unusual specimens: wet specimens, bones, plaster casts and medical instruments, as well as rare books and manuscripts from the Library of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Among the many new objects are a collection of shrunken heads from South America, Civil War-era surgical kits, and the return of the iron lung. Arcadia lab instructor Marie Duke Murphy ’73, ’09M shares her insights about the curiously bizarre human anomalies you will find preserved for medical study. Meet at the Mütter Museum, The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, 19 S. 22nd Street, Philadelphia.

Tuesday, April 13

Chocolate: From Montezuma to Madison Avenue 

Chocolate is more than just a craving, it is a complex confection of historical magnitude. The 3,000 year history of processing and manufacturing cocoa products has evolved from the simple preparation by the Maya elite of a cold beverage to the intricate creation of artisan truffles highly valued by the elite of our current culture. Scott Rawlins, Professor of Art and Design, joins alumnus Tom Sciascia ’86, owner of The Painted Truffle, to inform your mind and delight your taste buds with this interactive evening of historical discussion and truffle tasting. Meet in the Castle Mirror Room.
