Service Trip to Gualan, Guatemala with Arcadia Students
Arcadia University Spring Break, March 13-21, 2010
Volunteer with Arcadia students in medical clinics, orphanages, construction and schools. Spanish is a plus, but not a requirement. Alumni in the medical field would be a wonderful asset to provide care in the clinics, but all talents can be used to help the poor in rural mountainous communitites. Hotel accomodations are basic, but adequate. Rewards are incredible.
We partner with Hearts In Motion (HIM), an organization that provides quality medical care and assists in the development of social programs to improve health, education and the welfare of the people they serve in Guatemala and Honduras. HIM houses volunteer groups and medical teams and sends them to impoverished areas to perform reconstructive and orthopedic surgeries, and set up on-site medical clinics to offer the local community general health screenings and treat general health concerns. Other teams go to impoverished areas to spend a day in the local schools or daycares, visit the orphanage to feed and rock babies, and work on construction projects.
This is a NO-FRILLS service adventure. Volunteers need to be flexible, acclimate well to heat (it can get into the 90s), physically hearty, and it is even a good idea to leave your watch at home, as each day brings a new challenge and itineraries can change in a moment of time. You do not need any shots, but you will need your passport.
Basic Itinerary
Saturday, March 13
All travelers need to arrive in Guatemala City by 1:30 p.m. A bus from Hearts In Motion will pick us up and transport us to Gualan, about a 3-hour drive.
Sunday, March 14

Groups can choose to go to medical clinics in rural mountainous villages, help at daycare centers and teach at schools, work on construction sites, feed and rock babies and toddlers at the orphanage, and administer physical therapy to patients at the hospital. Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided.
Friday, March 19-20
After breakfast, the group leaves for Antigua for a free day of sightseeing and shopping. Your hotel accomodations are included, but meals and sightseeing excursions are on your own.
