Men's Basketball Season Preview
Tradition. Change. New Rivalries. Excitement. These are some of the words that begin to describe the 2007-2008 Arcadia University Men’s Basketball season. The Knights will begin play in the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation (MASCAC) - Freedom Conference, where they were picked to finish 6th out of 7 teams. There is a great tradition and level of national success this conference has had in the last decade or two including one National Champion (LVC ’95) one National Runner-Up (Elizabethtown ’01) and many teams deep into the NCAA Tournament. The Knights will engage in new battles and challenges that come with this schedule. “I am looking forward to preparing to play a very high level of competition every night we take the floor”, said coach Pat Dorney.
The Knights will return four seniors who contributed meaningful minutes last season. Kevin Brown will run the team at the point. Kevin has been starting since midway through his freshman year. He is explosive with the ball and is the engine that makes the Knights go. Eric Elliot is a three-year starter who earned 1st team All-PAC (Pennsylvania Athletic Conference) honors as a sophomore and will be expected to play at the level again as a senior. Sterling Green is a three-year starter who is a tremendous leader and one of the hardest working players to ever come through the program. Sterling is a great defender who will be asked to contribute even more on the offensive end this season. Our fourth senior, Jon Solomon, has provided depth at the wing for the Knights.
The three juniors, Bobby Mulholland, Terell Varnado and Blaise Pepitone all will be counted on to add a deep pool of talented wing players. Bobby will move into the starting role after providing energy off the bench last season. Terell Varnado was a major contributor the second half of the season last year and is a big, strong wing that can defend, rebound and play with high energy. Blaise Pepitone is a transfer who plays very hard, loves the game and is versatile enough to play the lead guard or off the ball.
The Knights sophomores, Steve Sharp, Duane Robinson and Glen Gagnon did not get much playing time as freshmen but will be competing for minutes this year. Steve is a long wing guard with range. Duane is very athletic and versatile enough to play inside and out while Glen adds depth to out front court and improves each day.
This year’s freshman class is composed of Darrell Mills, Alexis Alfonso and Brett Sharpe. All three are working very hard and challenging one another for minutes each day at practice.
The 2007-2008 season is one of change. The Knights go from a post dominate team over the last few seasons to a team that has great athleticism and depth in the backcourt. “We have a lot of interchangeable parts on this year’s roster, we are versatile, athletic and a very hard working group” says coach Dorney. “The make up of our roster in addition to the new league makes it an exciting time for Knights Basketball. We have an outstanding group of young men here and we embrace the challenges that lie ahead”.
