SWARTHMORE, PA: 4/26/09- The Arcadia baseball team played its final game of the season Sunday afternoon at Swarthmore College, falling 22-11. John Curreri finished his career on a high note at the plate, going 3-5 on the afternoon, with a run scored and an RBI. Curreri finishes the season hitting .427 from the plate, which was third best in the Commonwealth Conference.
The Knights were unable to overcome a hot start at the plate by the Garnets of Swarthmore College, as they jumped out to a 20-2 lead through the first three innings of play. Senior pitcher Bobby Mulholland received his first start of the year, however, on this day Swarthmore was too much, posting a seven run first inning, with five hits, and four walks.
Other seniors playing their last game for the Knights, included Tim Smith, Anthony Champi, and Dan Morris. Smith hammered home only his second home run of the season to cap a four run top of the eighth, driving home two on the play, collecting three RBIs on the afternoon.

Baseball loses two heartbreakers at Albright
READING, PA: 4/25/09 - The Arcadia baseball team traveled to Albright College this afternoon for its final conference doubleheader of the season, losing 1-0 in the opener and 6-5 in 10 innings in the second game.
In the first game, it was a pitchers duel throughout as Arcadia pitcher Stephen Vassalotti matched Albright pitcher Flannery inning for inning in a scoreless affair through 6 ½. It was until the bottom of the seventh and final inning before Albright hitters were able to break through driving home the game winning run after two walks were surrendered in the innings.
Arcadia was held hitless through the first three innings, before Matt Pempkowski singled to start off the fourth innings, but that was the only hit the Knights would get in the inning as Flannery retired the next three batters in order. The top of the fifth inning was Arcadia’s best chance to push a runner across as they loaded the bases with no one out, but the Knights hitting came to a halt as the next three batters were sent down swinging. That would be the last of the threats from the Knights, as they would not get another hit.
In the second game of the doubleheader Albright would jump out to a 3-0 lead through 5-0 lead through six innings, before the Knights would wake up. In the top of the seventh inning, with their backs to the wall, the Knights exploded for five runs on three hits, tying the score at 5-5.
Rich Sclamowitz started off the inning reaching on a error by the right fielder, that was the back the Knights would need to break back into the game. Tim Wiand would step up next to the plate lacing a triple to right field, scoring Schlamowitz. Following a walk by Tim Smith, Matt Rottet stepped to the plate and hammered a 3-run home run over the left field wall, pulling the Knights within one run of a tie. Following two straight outs, Anthony Champi looking to make something happen at the plate and keep the Knights alive, got a hold of a pitch and crushed it over the center field wall, tying the game at five, and giving Arcadia new life.
Following two scoreless innings, Albright would look to close the deal in the bottom of the tenth inning. With one out, and Arcadia looking to escape and get the game into another inning, however Albright’s third baseman hammered a game winning home run over the right, center wall. The loss sent Arcadia home with two really tough losses to close the conference season.
The Knights will play their final game of the season tomorrow when they travel to Swarthmore for a 1 pm first pitch.
Knights fall to Moravian 12-4
BETHLEHEM, PA: Moravian College jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back as Arcadia fell to the Greyhounds 12-4 in a non-conference match-up. Moravian took advantage of four costly Knight errors to score eight runs, as they improve to 18-16 overall, Arcadia falls to 5-27 entering the final games of the season.
The Moravian half of the second inning was the undoing for the Knights this afternoon, as they posted six runs in the inning, a commanding lead in which in the end was insurmountable. The Knights after coming into the game having collected 46 hits over the weekend in a three game series against Lebanon Valley College were held in check at the plate, only managing six hits.
Joe Rafanelli took the loss dropping his record to 1-1 overall. For the game Rafanelli allowed twelve runs only four of which were earned on twelve hits in six innings of actions. Matt Pempkowski continued his steady ways at the plate, going 2-4 with 2 RBIs.

Knights earn split of twinbill with Dutchmen
Philadelphia, PA: 4/18/09 The Arcadia baseball team had a productive day at the plate Saturday afternoon, and were able to come away with a split with Lebanon Valley College. The 10-9 win in the first game of the doubleheader was the Knights second conference win of the year, and its second in three outings. The Dutchmen of Lebanon Valley entered the game second in the conference standings and earned the 16-14 win in the rubber game of the series.
Lebanon Valley opened up the first contest by putting three runs on the board, but just as in the afternoon before, the Knights would respond with four runs of its own in the bottom half of the first. Arcadia would tack on another run in the bottom of the second to stretch its lead to 5-3. The score would remain the same until the Dutchmen came to bat in the top of the fifth, as they would go on to plate three runner and regain the lead, 6-5. In what was just an outstanding series, watching both teams battle inning after inning, the Knights responded in the bottom of the fifth with a run to tie the score at 6-6.
The teams would go scoreless in the sixth inning, leaving the game in doubt up to the last inning of the seven innings affair. In the top of the seventh, the Dutchmen looked to steal the game away as they had done Friday evening, scoring three runs, and grabbing a 9-6 lead.
Down to their last three outs, the Knights would show some fight, leading off the inning with a single by Dan Morris, and double by Tim Wiand, putting runners on second and third with no one down. A RBI sacrifice fly by Rich Sclamowitz would bring home Morris, and advance Wiand to third. Following a walk to Tim Smith, Adam Planamento stepped to the plate and lined a single into center field, scoring Wiand and bringing the Knights within one run. Pinch hitter Matt Rottet wouldn’t waste any time getting in on part of the action for the Knights, singling to right field and loading the bases with still only one man down. Matt Pempkowski would deliver a single to right field, plating Smith, and tying the game up at nine. Next up at bat was Anthony Champi, with two men down, and the game guaranteed to at least go to extras, Champi was taking that to chance and single home the game winning run for the Knights, as they won the game 10-9.
In the second game the Knights held a 8-4 advantage through five innings but were unable to hold on as the Dutchmen outscored the Knights 12-6 over the final two innings of play to earn a 16-14 victory.
The Knights return to action Wednesday April 22nd when they travel to Moravian College, the game is scheduled to begin at 4pm.
Knights fall 11-10 in 12 inning thriller to Lebanon Valley
Annville, PA: 4/18/09 The Arcadia baseball team took a 10-8 lead in the top of the 12th, but was unable to hold off the Lebanon Valley bats in the bottom half, falling by a final of 11-10. Looking to gain on momentum earned from Monday's conference win over Widener, the Knights fought throughout the game, coming up just a little short. The series will continue today with a home double-header scheduled for a noon time first pitch.
Arcadia was able to grab the first lead of the game, after both team went scoreless in the first inning, the Knights put four runs on the board in the top half of the second. Matt Pempkowski picked up and RBI on a single to left field scoring Mark Bowman. Mike McElhatton also brought home two Knights, picking up the RBIs on a double to left center field. The Dutchmen would answer with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to keep the score close.
Each team continued to answer each others production, scoring one run a piece in both the third and fourth innings, keeping the Knights ahead by a run. Lebanon Valley would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a run, after the Knights went scoreless in the top half.
In what proved to be a back and forth affair, the Knights would score a run in the top of the sixth inning, only to see Lebanon Valley answer with two runs in the bottom, grabbing their first lead of the game. The Knights, however, would not back down, scoring the game tying run in top of the eighth innings. Nine innings would not be enough to settle this contest, as through 11 innings the score remained tied at eight a piece.
In the top half of the 12th inning, with two outs already recorded the Knights would go to work at bat. Pempkowski singled through the left side, and then stole second base to put a runner in scoring position. McElhatton followed with a walk, putting two runners aboard for Dan Morris. Morris would come through in the clutch, delivering a double to right center field, scoring both Pempkowski and McElhatton, and giving the Knights a 10-8 lead going into the bottom of the 12th.
However, the Dutchmen would again have an answer, scoring three runs in the bottom of the 12th to win the game 11-10.
The Knights were led on the day by Pempkowski who went 4-5, with a walk and 4 runs scored along with an RBI.
Baseball Snaps Losing Skid in Twinbill Split with Widener
Arcadia Baseball registered a much welcomed 5-3 victory over Widener University in today's rescheduled Commonwealth doubleheader but not before being shutout by the Pride 26-0 in today's opening game of the series twinbill, originally scheduled as a homestand for the Knights. Senior hurler Zach Spece worked for the game two win which not only snaps a ten game losing streak for Arcadia but provides the team with their first ever win in the Commonwealth Conference.
The Knights jumped on Widener pitching early in the second game, responding from a less than efficient first game in the batting box. Anthony Champi led off the first inning with a single, followed by Mike McElhatton being hit by a pitch; Arcadia had its first two runners of the afternoon on base. After a double-play, it looked as though the Knights would again threaten but not produce, until Tim Wiand stepped to the plate and singled, scoring Champi from third and giving the Knights a 1-0 lead after one inning of play.
Holding the Pride scoreless again in the top of the second, the Knights went to work again at the plate. Leading off the inning with back to back singles were Adam Planamento and Mark Bowman. With runners at second and third and only one man down, McElhatton singled home Bowman, giving the Knights a 2-0 advantage. After another hit by pitch, the bases were loaded for Wiand, and again he was set to deliver, this time with a two RBI single, and rewarding the Knights with their biggest inning in three tries against the Pride.
Widener would respond with a three run inning of its own in the top of the fourth, closing the Knight advantage to 4-3. However, on this night Arcadia would not relinquish momentum, responding with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Using great pitching, a solid defensive effort, Arcadia would hold on to win its first Commonwealth Conference win, 5-3.
Spece pitched a complete game, seven inning effort, giving up three runs on seven hits, while striking out five Pride batters. At the plate the Knights were led by Wiand who went 2-4, producing three RBIs, and Planamento who went 3-3 in the second game of the double header.
Baseball overmatched by Widener, drops opening game of three game series to Pride
Arcadia University Baseball team lost the opening game of a three game conference series against Widener Uinversity today, 19-3. The game was originally to be played at Widener University Friday April 10th, but was moved up due to pending inclement weather conditions.
The Knights opened up the game with a run in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead against Commonwealth conference opponent Widener, but were unable to withstand the early momentum. Widener would answer with a run of its own in the bottom half of the first, and after seeing Arcadia grab the lead again in the top of the second 2-1, would answer with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning. A four run third and a seven run fourth put the game away for the Pride, as they ran away with the 19-3 victory over the Knights of Arcadia.
The Knights were unable to find an answer to the Pride’s offensive attack, as they pounded Arcadia pitching throughout the game. Arcadia starting pitcher Steve Romond was roughed up, allowing twelve runs on ten hits in three innings of work to take the loss.
On the day the Knights were led at the plate by Matt Pempkowski, who went 3-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, having a hand in all three runs scored for Arcadia on the afternoon.
Arcadia University Baseball will return to action home this weekend to finish the three-game conference series with Widener University. A doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday April 11th, with a start time of noon.
Messiah mounts pair of comebacks to sweep Knights
PHILADELPHIA, PA: 4/5/09 - Arcadia University Baseball dropped the first two games of their three game series with Messiah College at home Saturday with Messiah victorious in 12-10 and 13-5 come from behind wins in Commonwealth Conference competition. The final game of the series will be played in Grantham on Monday at 3:30 PM.
Graduate student John Curreri generated all-conference numbers through seven trips to the plate on Saturday, going 6-7 overall with 4 runs scored and 3 batted in coming on 4 doubles, a triple and a walk. Senior Dan Morris followed suit ripping a trio of doubles, a walk for 4 RBI on 3-7 from the plate. Other highlights came from senior Anthony Champi, whose game two, two –run shot over the center field fence gave the Knights a 2-1 lead after the first inning while first year Matt Rottet’s home run to left field broke a 7-7 tie in bottom of the 6th in game one to give the Knights the 9-7 lead with one inning to play.
Sealing the Knights (3-18, 0-5 Commonwealth) fate in game one was Messiah junior Jordan Zimmerman whose three run home run beyond centerfield in the top of the ninth put the Falcons in front 12-9, after the Falcons had tied the game at 9 earlier in the inning. Arcadia had sustained enough offense to support starter Steve Romond and reliever Dan Manning through six innings in the opener and strung together a huge 5 run comeback to tie the game at 6, after being down 6-1 in the bottom of the 4th. Messiah took a brief 7-6 lead in the 5th, answered by a pair of doubles from first years Rich Schlamowitz and Tim Wiand, yielding the first of Arcadia’s three run 6th inning before Rottet gave the Knights the 9-7 lead. Curreri completed his perfect game at the plate in the 7th tacking on Arcadia’s final run when he scored on a passed ball after a single to centerfield opened the inning. Schlamowitz took the loss on his 5-run, 4-hit 7th inning relief appearance. Junior Elliot Thomas registered the win for Messiah after entering in the 6th to give up 1 run on 3 hits.
The Falcons (10-16-1, 3-5 Commonwealth) opened game two with a 1-0 lead and it was clear the Knights had the same game plan at the dish. Junior Matt Pempkowski, who was walked 3 times and went 2-6 with 3 runs scored on the day from the lead off position, led off the bottom of the first with a single that preceded Champi’s go-ahead two-run shot to center, and for the second time of the day, the Knights held the lead after one. A pair of RBI singles to center from the Falcons allowed Messiah to regain a one-run lead after two but then they held AU scoreless and tacked on three more runs in the 3rd for a 6-2 lead. It appeared that Arcadia had recovered from their scoreless 2nd with a three-run third of their own as the hot sticks of Curreri and Morris continued to fluster Messiah’s pitching staff. A two-run triple from Curreri and an RBI double from Morris allowed Arcadia to cut into Messiah’s four run lead, as the scoreboard read 6-5 Falcons heading into the top of the 4th. And then run support for starter Stephen Vassolotti ended as Arcadia connected for just one more hit while Messiah added seven more scores, highlighted by a five-run 5th en rout to the 13-5 victory. Messiah sophomore Travis Thome registered the win through 4.2 innings of work allowing all 6 of Arcadia’s hits and 5 runs.
Arcadia senior Dan Manning led the Knights pitching staff with an ERA of 4.50 through 4 innings, giving up a pair of runs on 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 4 and was the only Knight to not allow any extra-base hits.
After Monday’s single game series closer at Messiah, the Knights host non-conference opponent Steven’s Institute of Technology on Wednesday at 4 PM.
Knights fall in final two series games to Elizabethtown
The Knights lost two tough games this afternoon in the final two games against conference opponent Elizabethtown College. The Blue Jays took the first game 8-1 and the second game of the doubleheader 10-4. This evening’s results drop the Knights to 3-18 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
The Knights got off on a great start leading 1-0 after the top of the first inning after an RBI single by Dan Morris brought home Matt Pempkowski who opened the game with a single of his own. However, this would draw an end to Arcadia offensive output for the game, as Elizabethtown starter went the full seven innings surrendering only three hits and the lone run.
E-town would answer in the bottom of the first with four runs and never looked back. Scoring another run in the bottom of the second and sealing the game with runs in both the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning.
In the second game E-town again was able to jump on Knights pitching early, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the first inning. However, the Knights would respond with two of their own runs in the top half of the second. Tim Wiand started off the inning with a single, and was brought home on a double by Rich Schlamowitz. Schlamowitz would come around to score on an error by the first baseman, notching the game at two.
The Knights would again fall behind by two runs, entering the top of the fifth down 4-2, but would again show some fight. A lead-off single by John Curreri, was followed by a walk issued to Morris. Curreri would advance to third on a wild pitch, and eventually was brought home on a sacrifice fly from the bat of Wiand. With two out, Schlamowitz would find a hole, singling and bringing home Morris to tie the game again, 4-4.
Arcadia however would not be able to hold onto the momentum as the Blue Jays answered with a run in the bottom of the inning and five more to ice the game in the bottom of the sixth.
On the afternoon the Knights were lead by Schlamowitz who went 2-4 on the afternoon, scoring one run, while bringing in two.
The Knights will be back in action Wednesday April 1st at Ursinus College.
Blue Jays Soar Past Knights in Series Opener
PHILADELPHIA, PA: 3/27/09 - Elizabethtown College used a four run second inning to take a 4-1 lead over Arcadia University before back to back home runs in the 6th all but sealed their 12-3 victory over the Knights in Friday afternoon's series opening game in Commonwealth Conference action. The two teams meet again tomorrow for games two and three at Elizabethtown.
Arcadia struck first with a one run first inning, the first of three one run innings that produced their only plated runs of the afternoon. Matt Pempkowski singled to lead off the inning before taking second on a SAC out from Anthony Champi and third on stolen base. He would find his way to home plate on a single to right field from John Curerri giving the Knights the early 1-0 lead.
Elizabethtown didn't waste any time breaking out their bats as a pair of walks and a pair of singles to center and left field plated the first two scores of the inning. With runners on second and third, the Blue Jays benefited from a single to left that brought home two more scores giving Elizabethtown the 4-1 lead after one.
Elizabethtown then split a pair of two-run doubles in the 3rd and the 5th while the Knights fell silent at the plate, to increase their lead to 8-1. In the bottom of the 5th, Joe Rafanelli ripped a double, advancing to third on a fielder's choice, and scored to make it 8-1 on an RBI single from Pempkowski. But the Blue Jays tacked on a run in the 6th before back to back home runs in the top of the 7th made it 10-2, leaving the Knights just two more innings to mount a comeback. While the Knights held strong on defense the rest of the way, on offense they could only muster one more run, complements of an Etown wild pitch to settle for their first league loss of the 2009 season.
Etown out-hit the Knights 15-7. Steve Romond picked up the loss through five innings of work, giving up 4 earned runs on 11 hits. Romond walked four and struck out two. Pempkowski and Dan Morris each went 2-4 from the dish to lead Arcadia.
Neumann College hits its way past the Arcadia Knights
PHILADELPHIA, PA: Neumann College used two huge innings, and 23 hits on the afternoon, in rout to a 17-5 defeat of Arcadia University, at Enry field Wednesday afternoon.
The Knights of Neumann College opened up the game posting five runs in the top of the first, three coming off a bases clearing triple by Kevin Lengyel. For the day Lengyel went 3-6 scoring two runs and batting in three.
Arcadia would look to answer in the bottom of the fifth inning trailing 6-1. With two runs already in, Dan Morris stepped to the plate with runners on second and third with two men down, Morris roped a double into center field, plating two Knights. The Knights would end the inning pulling the game to within one run at 6-5.
The game’s undoing came as Neumann stepped to the plate in the top of the sixth, scoring seven more run to put the game out of reach, as the Neumann pitching staff silenced the Arcadia bats, not allowing another run over the final three innings.
The Knights of Arcadia were only able to muster seven hits on the day, with seven different players recording one hit.
Arcadia University will host its first conference game Friday March 27th against the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College; game-time is set for 3 pm.
Wolverines again have the Knights number
PHILADELPHIA, PA: Wesley College defeated the Knights of Arcadia yesterday afternoon 10-3 at Enry Field. In the two teams second contest of the year, following the season opener for both teams on February 8th, Wesley College jumped out to a 7-0 lead through 5 ½, a lead which proved too insurmountable for the Knights to overcome.
The Wolverines lead 2-0 after the top of the first inning, two consecutive scoreless innings followed before Wesley would strike again scoring one run in top of the fourth, and four more runs in top of the six, building their advantage.
The Knights would threaten in the bottom of the sixth inning, loading the bases with only one out, following singles by Dan Morris and Rich Schlamowitz, and a walk to Tim Smith. However, the Knights would only be able to bring one run across the plate with a sacrifice fly by Matt Rotett.
Wesley would answer with another run in the top of the seventh and two more in the top of the eighth. The Knights tried to respond scoring one run in the bottom of the seventh and again threatening after loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but as in the sixth inning was only able to bring one run home.

Knights Snap Six Game Skip Against CSI
Philadelphia, PA: 3/21/09 - Arcadia University returned to Erny Field on Saturday where they snapped a six game losing streak with a 12-5 win over the Dolphins from The College of Staten Island.

Knights fall in 2-1 pitcher's duel to Oglethorpe University
ATLANTA, GA: 3/19/09 - The Knights of Arcadia University Baseball fell in a very close contest last night to Oglethorpe University. Playing Oglethorpe in the second game in as many nights, Arcadia reversed the trends of the previous contest, leading for most of the game, before the Petrels came from behind for the 2-1 victory.
In a pitchers duel, Rich Schlamowitz got the start for Arcadia, pitching a complete game surrendering two runs only one of which was earned on six hits, while walking three and striking out two.
Arcadia was able to strike first in a game of few hits and even fewer runs. In the top of the second inning, leading off, Schlamowitz stepped up to the plate and helped his own cause lacing a double into right center field. After a fly out, Schlamowitz advanced to third and was brought home on a RBI single by Tim Smith.
The Knights would hold onto their 1-0 advantage through 5 ½ innings, lead by spectacular pitching and solid defense. In the bottom of the sixth Schlamowitz would briefly lose control, and Oglethorpe took advantage, using two singles, and two hit by pitches to reach base; the Petrels eventually tied the scored at 1-1.
With the score remaining tied and two men down in the bottom of the eighth inning, two mistakes by the Knights would prove costly. After a single and a walk by Oglethorpe, both runners moved up a base following a wild pitch. With runners on second and third and two men down, a ball would get past Arcadia catcher Anthony Champi, and the winning run would cross the plate.
The Knights were lead on the day by the pitching and hitting of Schlamowitz who scored Arcadia’s only run on the day, as well as the hitting and fielding of Smith who went 2-4 at the plate, with an RBI, as well as three put-outs and assists.
