2009 Arcadia University Men's Tennis Season Outlook
In his 5th season, head coach Lak Sphabmixay (Arcadia '99) and his Arcadia Men's Tennis team is determined to win every time they step on the court. The 2009 Knights are in their first season in the Middle Atlantic’s Commonwealth Conference and they are looking to make an impact. Coach Sphabmixay describes his players as very competitive and is hoping to surprise many of the teams on the schedule. “This attitude will hopefully put our team in a situation where we’re right up there fighting for the conference championship,” says Sphabmixay. The bright season outlook is sparked by four returning players and an exciting group of newcomers.
Helping Coach Sphabmixay lead the team this year are junior co-captains Kevin Langner (Audubon,NJ) and Adrell Dalsan(Caries, ST. LUCIA). Sphabmixay raves about both players’ leadership abilities saying “Langer’s uplifting spirit and competitiveness will spread throughout the lineup, while Dalsan’s dedication and leadership on and off the court will encourage other players.” Dalsan was in the starting lineup last year and is expected to contribute greatly this season. Also returning from last year’s team are junior Danny Ly (Bensalem, PA) and sophomore Bart Blankenship (Danville, PA). Both players were also on last year’s starting lineup.
There are several newcomers to this year’s team, including freshman Cory Andrews (York, PA). Coach Sphabmixay describes Andrews as the player to keep an eye on and expects him to be one of the team’s top players this season. Andrews and the other newcomers will all compete for spots on the lineup.
The 2009 Knights will look to replace last year’s senior captain and well-decorated Arcadia scholar-athlete, Tim Fitzgerald. In 2008, Fitzgerald captured the Freedom Conference Player of the Year and the No. 1 Singles Conference Championship. He also earned the 2008 Middle Atlantic Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year for men's tennis and the 2008 Philly-SIDA Academic All-Area Player of the Year.
When asked if he is excited about this season, Coach Sphabmixay replied simply, “How could I not be excited when I have a group of players who want to win every time they step on the court?”
The Knights open their season at home against St. Mary’s College on Sunday, March 8th while Commonwealth play begins April 1 in Annville at Lebanon Valley College.
