2009 Outlook

Lacrosse Prepares to Attack the MAC in 2009
Knights Selected to Finish Tied for 11th in Pre Season Coaches Poll
GLENSIDE, PA:  2/27/09 -  As head coach Cindy Joseph (Arcadia ’97) enters her seventh season leading the Arcadia Women’s Lacrosse team, she has high expectations for her returning players and newcomers alike. Joseph is looking to capitalize on the team’s strengths and make some crucial improvements in order to be a strong competitor in the Middle Atlantic Conference in the 2009 season.

The Knights were recently selected to finish tied for 11th in the Middle Atlantic Conference (along with Alvernia University) in the 2009 pre-season coaches poll but the team will most likely use that as fuel to surprise some of the conference teams like Kings (selected 8th), Misericordia (selected 9th) and Wilkes (selected 10th).  FDU-Florham was selected to take the conference title in 2009.  The Knights must replace three key players from last year’s graduating class, Jamie Stevenson at attack, Jakki Timony at midfield, and goalkeeper Michelle Leone.  Stevenson was the team’s leading scorer in 2008 while Timony led the team in ground balls.

Returning from last year’s team are seniors Melanie Mark (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen), Kate Beers (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May), Shannon Bustin (Glenoden, PA/Interboro), and Erin Cunningham (Alden, PA/Archbishop Prendegast). Mark and Beers will help lead the team in the midfield, an area of strength for the Knight’s this season. Bustin and Cunningham will be rebuilding the offense on attack. Coach Joseph will be looking to all of her seniors to provide strong leadership this season both on and off the field.

Juniors Maura Frischman (Succasunna, NJ/Pope John XXIII) and Danielle Klim (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown Area) will anchor the team’s defense while fellow classmate Brittany Rasmussen (Kunckletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) takes over as the team's starting goaltender.

Returning to the team as sophomores are Kelly Donahue (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South), Jenni Groves (Millville, NJ/Millville), Kreena Patel (Chesterfield, NJ/Northern Burlington), Kate Gamber (Lansdowne, PA/Archbishop Prendegast), Nicolette Jacome (West Haven, CT/West Haven), Jen Ng (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg), and Melissa Yaeger (Stratford, NJ/Sterling). Coach Joseph expects much success out of Groves in the midfield and Donahue on defense. Patel will look to join Groves, Mark, and Beers in the midfield. Gamber and Jacome are looking to take over on the defensive end while Ng and Yaeger are looking for time on attack.

There are several newcomers to this year’s team looking to make an impact and help the Knights find success this season. Transfer Kelsey Dobbins (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) is expected to get significant time at attack in her first season with the team. Freshman Stephanie Holguin (Jackson, NJ/New Egypt) will be making the transition from defense to midfield while Megan Madison (Pequannock, NJ/ Pequannock Township) will be competing for time on defense.  Freshman goalkeeper Evelyn Ciaburri (Southington, CT/Soutington) is looking for significant time in the cage while newly recruited goal keeper Amalie Kreitman (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) also looks to compete.  Another freshman, Lori Spangler (Hedgesville, WV/hedgesville) will look to fill in wherever she is needed as a utility player.

Coaching alongside Joseph this year is graduate assistant Kate Johnston. Johnston is a student in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Arcadia and, according to Coach Joseph, brings a new offensive perspective and extreme enthusiasm to the team.

The Knights open their season at home against MAC foe King’s College on Sunday March 8th at 1:00 PM.
