Women's Lacrosse Fall Short in Season Finale
GLENSIDE, PA:  4/25/09 -  Arcadia Women's Lacrosse hosted the Manhattanville College Valiants in the season closing game of the Middle Atlantic Conference schedule Saturday afternoon with the Valiants coming away 13-7 winners to end the Knights season. The low scoring defensive focused first half ended with the Knights trailing by just 3 but they were unable to contain the Valiants in the second half.

First year Stephanie Holguin put the Knights on the board first, striking on the game's first free position attempt 3:10 into the contest.  But the Valiants strung together three straight scores to take a 3-1 lead by the twenty minute mark.  Senior Shannon Bustin and Melanie Mark connected for Arcadia's next score and then sophomore Kreena Patel located Holguin would made no mistake in tying the game at 3-3 with seven minutes to play in the opening half.  But it was the Valiants who added two more scores before the first half closed, taking a 5-3 lead in a low scoring defenisve focused first half.

Manhattanville would go up 7-3 in the first three minutes of the second and then Arcadia found some scoring
with a one-time shot from sophomore Jenni Groves from Bustin and a Patel free position, putting the Knights within two of the Valiants 7-5 lead.  The Valiants would score next before Bustin found Groves again, keeping it a two goal deficit, but the Valiants used their speed to create openings in front of Arcadia keeper Evelyn Ciaburri, who stood on her head throught the first 43 minutes of the game, making numerous point blank stops, and put their foot on the throttle en-route to the 17-13 victory.  Ciaburri finished with 18 saves in net.

Seniors Shannon Bustin, Melanie Mark, Erin Cunningham and Kate Beers played their final game for the Knights.
Bustin ends her four-year campaign with 81 goals, 55 assists;  Mark ends her career with 54 goal, 14 assists;  Cunningham with 29 goals, 34 assists; and Beers with 6 goals, 108 ground balls and and 35 draw controls.

Women's Lacrosse Escapes Alvernia in Second Half Thriller
GLENSIDE, PA:  4/22/09 -  First year Stephanie Holguin snapped a 13-all tie with less than four minutes remaining before senior Melanie Mark iced the win with the final score of the game to lift the Knights to a big 15-13 Middle Atlantic Conference win over Alvernia University Wednesday afternoon in Glenside. The win snaps a 8 game losing skid for the Knights who play their season finale at home this Saturday against Manhattanville College at 1 PM.  Arcadia improves to (3-10/2-8 MAC) while Alvernia drops to (8-8/2-8 MAC).

After falling behind 1-0 just four minutes in, the Knights went on a four goal spree to give themselves some breathing room with a 4-1 lead twelve minutes into the contest.  Alvernia's leading scorer Felicia Sippel, who finished with four goals on the day, made it a 4-2 game before the Knights would benefit from another four goal spree including two free positions by sophomore Jenni Groves and senior Shannon Bustin to take an 8-2 lead.

After the Crusaders closed the half with a score, they opened the second half of play with back to back tallies cutting into the Knights lead 9-6.  Bustin would later find Groves for her third of the afternoon putting Arcadia back up by four, 12-8 but what appeared to be a Knights' momentum boost suddenly turned into a spark for the Crusaders as Sippel won the following draw and hauled down the field for a goal before Heather Coppola picked up her second of the day just one minute later bringing Alvernia back within two, 12-10.  With seven miutes to play, Holguin knocked home her third of the day to give Arcadia a three goal cushion but the feisty Crusaders kept battling, and hit the Knights up for three unaswered goals to tie the game at 13 with less than five minutes to play.  Sippel scored the game tying goal at 55:08.

Arcadia was finally able to shake off Alvernia a few possessions later as Holguin worked her defender to the left and then went right toward the goal mouth and rocketed the ball past the Alvernia's keeper to put Arcadia up 14-13, which turned out to be the game winner.  Melanie Mark then added an insurance tally at 58:32 to ice the win.

First year keeper Evelyn Ciaburri made 19 saves in net for Arcadia, stopping all three Alvernia free positions while going 7-9 on clear attempts.  Sophomore Kelly Donahue, who scored just her second of the year, led the team with 5 caused turnovers and 4 ground balls.  Holguin finished with four goals while Groves added three goals, 2 assists and four draw controls.  Sophomore Kreena Patel added a pair of scores and 3 draw controls for Arcadia.  Bustin finsihed with 2 goals and 1 assist, while senior Erin Cunningham added a goal and an assist for the Knights.

The Knights will close out the 2009 season this Saturday at home hosting Manhattanville College in a Middle Atlantic matchup begining at 1 PM.

Widener Defeats Knights in Second Half
GLENSIDE, PA:  4/21/09 -  After a three goal lead early on, Arcadia Women's Lacrosse went into the half tied with Widener University at 7-all until the Pride erupted for 7 unanswered goals late in the second half to hand the Knights their 8th Middle Atlantic Conference loss of the season, an 18-11 victory in favor of the visiting Pride (7-8, 3-6 MAC).

With the score knotted at 1-all, Arcadia (2-10/1-8 MAC) ripped two free position scores past Widner keeper Linda Salcedo to take a 3-1 lead at the ten minute mark.  It would be first year Stephanie Holguin's only goal of the day and the first of three from senior Shannon Bustin.  Holguin then fed junior Kelsey Dobbins for a goal at 14:45 which gave the Knights their largest lead of the game at 5-2.  But it was Widener junior Jackie Elliot who opened the games scoring and ended it for the Pride on her 8th of the day with less than four minutes to play that proved too much for the Knights in the end.

The Knights did remain within striking distance, trailing by just one with less than 20 minutes remaining when senior Melanie Mark rifled her third score of the afternoon past Salcedo on a free position, making it 11-10 Pride.  However, the Pride immediately started a 7 goal bonanza, started and finished by Elliott, putting the Pride in front by 8 before Arcadia sophomore Kreena Patel ended the bleeding with an unassisted tally with :50 seconds to play.

Salcedo ended with 7 saves in the win for Widener while first year keeper Evelyn Ciaburri stopped 13 Pride shots on goal for the loss.  Sophomore Jenni Groves added two goals and an assist for Arcadia while Bustin finished as the team's high scorer with 4 points.  Senior Kate Beers nabbed team highs in draw controls and caused turnovers, with three each.

Arcadia plays host to Middle Atlantic newcomer Alvernia University Wednesday at 4 PM.
