2008-09 Season Highlights
Women’s Soccer saturate First Team All Commonwealth; Rick Brownell tabbed as Coach of the Year
Annville, PA: 11/10/09 - [Full Release] Arcadia University Women’s Soccer landed four individuals on the All Commonwealth First Team alongside 2009 Coach of the Year Rick Brownell. It was announced today that juniors #14 Janelle Jablonski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and #7 Katie O’Malley (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) and sophomore #9 Brittany Drosdak (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic), each named to the All Commonwealth second team in 2008, have been chosen as First Team members in 2009 along with first year starting keeper #00 Jacki Law (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood).
Concluding his seventh season at the helm, Coach Brownell has compiled a 76-44-17 overall record (35-17-7 conference) and has led his team into post-season play all seven years, with three conference finals appearances and a league title that came in 2005 when the Knights competed in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC). The 2009 season was the team’s first trip to the Commonwealth Conference finals, since joining the league in 2008, and the most wins in a season (15) and fewest losses (2) for the team under Brownell’s tutelage.

Jablonski and O’Malley finished one and two as the team’s top scorer’s, nabbing their third straight all-conference selection since their freshman seasons in 2007. The duo finished among the league’s leading offensive threats and were instrumental in guiding the Knights to a 15-2-3 showing this season.
Jablonski led the Knights with 9 goals and 4 assists (22 pts) and was tied for 6th in league in points and tied for 4th in goals. O’Malley erupted during the month of October to finish with 6 goals and a team high 9 assists (21 pts), including 3 game winners and perfect 2-2 mark on penalty kicks. The junior mid-fielder was 8th in the league in points and tied for third in assists.
Drosdak earns her second straight all-conference selection as the anchor of the Knights defensive unit. During the 2009 campaign, flanked by a pair of outstanding first year starting backs in Kyrastin Cook and CJ McDonnell, Drosdak not only protected her first year keeper but managed to keep nearly every opponent off the scoreboard as the Knights compiled 14 shutout performances and held opponents to .67 goals against. Beginning with their first win of the season on Sept. 1, an 8-0 romping of Cedar Crest, the Knights went undefeated through 16 games, a streak snapped by Messiah, the only two losses on Arcadia’s 2009 schedule.
And what wasn’t stopped by the Arcadia defense, was so by first year starting keeper Jacki Law. In her first season of collegiate play, Law carved her name on multiple Arcadia records including setting a new school single season shutout record (11), moving into 3rd all-time on the school’s career shutout record (17.5) and landing in a tie for 2nd all-time in single season goals-against (.71). Law, who racked up 1766 minutes through 20 starts, led the league in save percentage (.889), shutouts (11), was tied for first in saves (112) and was 2nd in goals against (.71) behind Messiah’s Autumn Reilly.
During the 2009 season, the Knights placed as high as 5th in the Mid-Atlantic NSCAA/Adidas poll and 7th in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic region. All four players will return for the 2010 season to help lead the Knights back to the Commonwealth title game.
Knights defeated 4-0 as Messiah wins third straight league title
Grantham, PA: 11/7/09 - #2 Arcadia Women's Soccer held #1 Messiah to one first half goal but a Falcon scoring spree opening with their second goal just 1:45 into the second half, before adding two more in the next twenty minutes left the Knights with a 4-0 loss in the Commonwealth Conference Championship match Saturday afternoon at Shoemaker Field. The loss for the Knights (15-2-3) is the second 4-0 loss to the nationally ranked defending Division III champs in two weeks as the Falcons have been the only team to blemish an otherwise stellar season record for Arcadia, who, through late October, enjoyed a 16 game undefeated streak. Saturday was the first time the Knights advanced to the Commonwealth final, after having played for a Freedom Conference final in 2007. The win for Messiah (19-0-1) is their third straight Commonwealth title as they advacne to their tenth straight NCAA Tournament.
Messiah's Amanda Naeher found Joanna Haqq for a give and go at the 18, and Haqq, taking advatage of the rolling wind cross field, curled her shot into the far post past Arcadia keeper Jacki Law at 9:52 to put the home team up 1-0. As the Knights back line regrouped, Messiah would keep the pressure on, firing 15 shots toward the Arcadia goal, but Law was perfect on the two that landed on the frame while the wind and Messiah misfires went either high or wide. The Falcons clutched and grabbed to control possession, allowing the Knights just one first half shot from junior Katie O'Malley, while sophomores Brittany Drosdak, Amy Lupfer and first year CJ McDonnell's play in the back line for the Knights, left Messiah frustrated at the half with just a 1-0 advantage.
But it would be the size advantage of Messiah's front line that saw them send 8 shots in the opening nine minutes of the second half towards Law, beginning with two unassisted hits by Naeher for a 3-0 Messiah lead before Erin Hench recovered a rebound off a brilliant save by Law on Corrine Wulf in the 62nd minute to make it 4-0 Falcons, where it would stand as the final. As a first year keeper that helped her team allow just 10 opponent goals all season, Law finished the game having made seven saves, most on point blank Messiah shots.
Despite tonight's loss and after entering the NCAA's Mid-Atlantic Regions rankings at #7 for the first time all season, combined with a near perfect overall mark, Arcadia hopes to keep their season alive as they remain hopeful for a bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament which will be announced on Monday. www.ncaa.com

Knights Blast Blue Jays 3-0 to Advance to League Finals
Glenside, PA: 11/3/09 - Arcadia University Women's Soccer, the number two seed, outpaced the number three seed Elizabethtown College Blue Jays by a 3-0 margin in today's Commonwealth semi finals to advance to their first Commonwealth Conference Championship game in just their second year in the league. The win is the Knight's second over the Blue Jays in ten days, following a 3-2 come from behind win during the regular season that saw Arcadia prove victorious in double overtime. Arcadia improves to 15-1-3 overall and advances to face defending conference and Divsion III national champion #1 Messiah this Saturday at Shoemaker Field in Grantham. The Falcons knocked off #4 ALbright Tuesday evening by a lopsided 8-0 margin. Saturday's game time will be announced Wednesday.
On this day however, it was the Knights who contolled much of the action, getting on the board first in the 12th minute. After an Etown penalty in the goal box, junior midfielder Katie O'Malley (Coatesville, PA/Coastesville Area) left booted a penalty kick to the far right past Blue Jay netminder Jess Manchak (Lancaster, PA) for a 1-0 Arcadia advantage. It was O'Malley's sixth of the season and her second successful penalty kick in as many chances, both coming against the Blue Jays.
Etown nearly found redemption near the 20 minute mark as Kelsey Boehmer's (Myerstown, PA) header spun high and to the right over the top corner of the net and despite some late first half pressure from the Blue Jays, the score remained 1-0 with Arcadia in front at the half.
With just over six minutes into second half action, sophomore Stephanie Welch (Lebanon Twp., NJ/Moravian) fed junior Janelle Jablonski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) from the midfield as Jablonski drew her defender toward the right side of the box and blasted a shot from just inside the 18 past Manchak putting the Knights in front 2-0. Jablonski would add her second of the day and team leading ninth of the year to seal the win at 79:47 when she played a ball to herself at the 30 and again drew her defender to the right and booted the ball into the right side past Manchak for a commanding 3-0 Knights, which stood as the final.
The Knights led 14-8 in shots and 2-0 in corner kicks. First year keeper Jacki Law (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains Fanwood) made 4 saves in net for the Knights and improved to 14-1-3 on the year, with her 11th shutout of the season. Manchak made 7 saves for Elizabethtown who concludes their season at 9-10 overall.

Knights secure post-season home field with 2-0 win at Alvernia
Reading, PA: Juniors Dana Faulks and Janelle Jablonski each scored a second half goal to lead Arcadia University past Alvernia University 2-0 in today's regular season Commonwealth finale. The win is the Knight's 14th of the season (14-1-3, 6-1 CC) as they finish the regular season with a lock on the second seed for the league championships which will begin on Tuesday, November 3. Arcadia will host an opponent yet to be determined.
Complementing a sound defensive effort, the offense went right to work to open the second half when Arcadia was awarded an indirect kick. Junior Katie O'Malley found Faulks, waiting at the 18, and she one-timed O'Malley's kick past the Alvernia keeper an in for a 1-0 Knights lead. Arcadia tacked on another goal in the 64th minute on a pretty left side feed from sophomore Stephanie Welch to Jablonski, who one touched the ball then directed it home giving the Knights the 2-0 advantage.
First year Jacki Law preserved her part of the Arcadia shutout with 3 saves through 82 minutes before being relieved by Megan Madison who played the final 8 minutes in the Arcadia net.
Knights unable to weather Falcons
Grantham, PA: 10/27/09 - Locked for first place overall in the Commonwealth Conference standings, Arcadia University and #1 Messiah met this evening in a make up of their originally scheduled showdown on Oct. 17, postponed due to heavy rains ten days back. And despite tonight's steady presence of rain that soaked Shoemaker Field the two teams, entering the game with identical 5-0 league marks, battled for sole posession with the defending league and Division III champs earning bragging rights with a 4-0 win on their home field.
Tonight's loss is Arcadia's (13-1-3, 5-1 CC) first of the season as their impressive 16 game undefeated streak comes to a hault. The Knights maintain good positioning for a home semifinal playoff contest, now residing second overall in front of Elizabethtown, Widener and Albright holding three through five.
Joanna Haqq opened tonight's scoring for Messiah (16-0-1, 6-0 CC) with a strong header off a cross feed from Amanda Neaher at 8:22 putting the Falcons up 1-0. Arcadia's gameplan, like they have done in their past two league outings, was to obtain the next score in order to keep pace with the depth-riden Falcons, who saw 13 substitutes contribute minutes. With the score within reasonable striking distance, Arcadia held the Falcons off the scoreboard until late in the 27th minute that saw Messiah net not one, but two scores to quickly take a 3-0 lead into the half. Leah Sipe poked home a low shot near post past Arcadia first year keeper Jacki Law at 27:48 before Tannia Nieto's blast off a right side cross found a home in the back of the net at 28:13.
Following 31 minutes of shutout soccer from the point of Messiah's third goal of the night, Arcadia's opportunities to be creative were limited thus, having earned credit for just 2 shots on the game to Messiah's 34. Neaher would then add a fourth Messiah goal, giving her 3 points on the night, scoring in the 59th minute on a 17 yard blast layed up for her by Erin Hench. The Falcon defense enjoy a bench that sustained fresh legs on the field despite the restrictive conditions but Arcadia couldn't buy a break, or a corner attempt as the Falcons held a 9-0 advantage in those. Arcadia's lone shots came from juniors Janelle Jablonski and Katie O'Malley while Law worked her way to 13 saves.
A win against Alvernia University (3-15, 0-6 CC) this Saturday will lock the Knights in a the higher seed to host a semi final round league matchup on Tues., Nov. 4.
Knights jump five places in NSCAA/Adidas Mid-Atlantic rankings
Glenside, PA: 10/27/09 - Arcadia Women's Soccer jumped from #10 in last week's NSCAA/Adidas Mid-Atlantic rankings to #5 following a 2-0 week in Commonwealth play that began as the Knights knocked off Widener 4-2 on Tuesday, last week's #5 team, now tied for #6, before a thrilling 3-2 double overtime comeback win over Elizabethtown on Saturday. Complete poll
Both wins were flanked by two phenominal offensive performances by junior Katie O'Malley, who erupted for 11 points (4G, 3A), and was tabbed this week's Commonwealth Player of the Week.
The Knights (13-0-3, 5-0 CC) extended their undefeated streak to 16 games are currently tied for first in the league with defending conference and league champion Messiah (15-0-1, 5-0 CC), a team the Knight's travel to this evening for a 7 PM in Grantham. Knights Drench Elizabethtown in Commonwealth Classic
Glenside, PA: 10/24/09 - With twenty seven minutes remaining in regulation, Arcadia Women's Soccer found themselves in a quandry, down 2-0 in a deludge otherwise known as Kuch Field with a 13 game undefeated streak on the line. Their opponent, the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College, entering the game in 3rd place in the Commonwealth standings with a 3-1 league record. Enter the spoiler: junior two-time all conference Katie O'Malley (Coatesville, PA/Coastesville Area). After robbing Widener for 6 points on Tuesday, O'Malley added five more today, first with an assist on junior Jessica Leathem's (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro-North) goal to cut Etown's lead to 2-1, then the equalizer on a penalty kick she put under the cross bar before extinguishing the Blue Jays for good with a 30 yard free kick just 45 seconds into the second overtime stanza.
With three unanswered goals, the Knights maintain their 16 game unbeaten streak as they improve to 13-0-3 and an impressive 5-0 in the league. With a valiant effort by the defense in the second half, Arcadia rebounded from a lackluster first stanza that saw the Blue Jays control the game during the barrage of rain that poured from the sky, making for less than ideal field conditions. As the Knight's home white jersey's soaked up more mud and rain than sweat, and after Elizabthtown's Caitlin Roderick scored her second of the day, a penalty kick that she placed under the crossbar, fans could sense something good was about to happen. And six minutes later it did. O'Malley booted a 40 yard free kick that rang off the cross bar and out to Leathem who converted the rebound to a goal and suddenly what looked like a run-away, was now a game. It was Leathem's third goal of the season. Arcadia was appropriately awarded a penalty kick at 76:24 and the junior two-time all conference mid-fielder made no mistake, drilling the ball past backup keeper Jess Machak, knotting the game at 2-all, which eventually sent the game into extra minutes.
O'Malley moved into the team's lead for points with (5G, 8A) 18 points as she helped her team go 2-0 in a critical week of conference play with powerhouse Messiah on tap for Tuesday evening in Grantham.
First year Jacki Law (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains Fanwood) improves to 12-0-3 as she made 6 saves against the Blue Jays. The back line of junior all conference Brittany Drosdak (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic), sophomore Amy Lupfer (Andover, NJ/Newton) and first year Kyarstin Cook (Murraysville, PA/Franklin Regional) tightened the defensive end in the second half along with the valiant services of junior Stephanie Edson (Milton, PA/Milton) and first year CJ McDonnell (Glenwood, IL/Homewood-Flossmoor) who held the Blue Jays attack in check through the end of the game.
Arcadia will travel to Grantham, PA to take on defending conference and Division III national champion Messiah this Tuesday at 7 PM at Shoemaker Field.
Banner night for O'Malley as Knights tame Pride 4-2
Chester, PA: 10/20/09 - It was just a matter of time for Arcadia junior midfielder Katie O'Malley. The two time all-conference selection entered tonight's much anticipated cross city showdown with #5 NSCAA/Adidas ranked Widener University with 7 points on the season and just one goal to her credit.
Not only was Arcadia, #10 in this weeks NSCAA/Adidas mid-atlantic rankings, riding the wave of over 863 minutes of shutout soccer, the Knights were playing to keep their 14 game unbeaten in tact. While the shutout streak came to an end in the second half, the Knights erupted for their highest point output of the season, netting 4 goals against the Pride on their home field to maintain an unblemished 4-0 record in the Commonwealth Conference. O'Malley, who put the Knights up 2-0 at the half with a 30-yard bomb past Widener keeper Alee Gunter, iced the win in the 73rd minute with a 25-yard blast she rung off the crossbar and in past backup keeper Vanessa Hejnas as Arcadia handed Widener their 2nd league defeat and rolled to their 15th straight game without a loss.
Sophomore Ashley Knueppel opened the game's scoring with her second goal of the year, booting home a free kick from O'Malley. After O'Malley put Arcadia in front 2-0, Widener went to their back up keeper and soon avenged with a 10-yard shot that Rachel Kyprianou placed in the inside right post past Arcadia first year keeper Jacki Law in the 50th minute of play. But sophomore Stephanie Welch had an answer as she took a feed from O'Malley from the left side from 10 yards out and notched her team leading 7th goal of the season for a 3-1 Knights lead. Junior Stephanie Edson collected her second assist of the year, finding the magic foot of O'Malley for a 25-yard shot at 73:16 to put Arcadia up 4-1. Widener's Brittany Harvis squeaked in another right side goal past Law at 84:36 but it was too little too late for the Pride, who led the Knights in shots 15-9 and 9-1 in corners.
Law finished with 5 saves, improving her first year record to 11-0-3. She sports a Goals Against Average of 0.27 and a Save Percentage of .962 and a league leading 10 shutouts.
The Knights host Elizabethtown College this Saturday at noon for their final regular season home game of the season.
Knights to face Widener in tonight's Commonwealth battle
Glenside, PA: Arcadia Women's Soccer looks to keep their undefeated season in tact this evening, playing regionally ranked #5 Widener (11-2-2, 2-1 CC) under the lights in Chester, PA. The Knights (11-0-3, 3-0 CC) dropped down to #10 in this week's NSCAA/Adidas Mid-Atlantic rankings after holding the #9 slot last week.
Stats for tonight's game can be found at the following link (Live Stats) beginning at 7 PM. Arcadia, who has already knocked off Lycoming and Albright in league play, was slated to travel to #1 Messiah (13-0-1, 3-0 CC) this past Saturday but the Nor'easter forced the battle of undefeated league foes to be postponed until Tuesday, Oct. 27. The one league loss that taints Widener's Commonwealth record came at the hands of the defending Division III champions, a 3-0 loss to the Falcons on Oct. 10.
Messiah, Widener and Arcadia are ranked respectively in nearly every statistical category among their Commonwealth competition, with the Knights holding the lead in Goals Against Average (.14) and Shutouts (11). Flanked by a phenominal defensive starting unit, sophomores All Commonwealth Brittany Drosdak (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic), sophomore Amy Lupfer (Andover, NJ/Newton) and first year Kyrastin Cook (Murraysville, PA/Ranklin Regional) have aided first year keeper Jacki Law's (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains Fanwood) dominence in net. Law currently ranks as the best in Division III in Save Percentage (.972) and 3rd in Goals Against Average (.159). The Knights have not allowed an opponent goal in over 863 consecutive minutes and as a team rank #2 in Division III in Goals Against Average (.145), #1 in Save Percentage (.973) and in the top five in Shutout Percentage 785 (11 shutouts).
Junior Janelle Jablonski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park), who notched her 50th collegiate point with a pair of scores against Rutgers-Camden back on Oct. 6th, ranks third in the league in shots, 8th in scoring with 16 points (6G, 4A) and is tied with sophomore Stephanie Welch (Lebanon Twp., NJ/Moravian) for 7th in goals (6G, 3A).
Aside from the makeup date with the Falcons on Oct. 27, Elizabethtown (6-7, 2-1 CC) (Oct. 24 at home) and Alvernia (3-13, 0-4 CC)(Oct. 31 in Reading, PA) remain on the Knights 2009 schedule.
Saturday Wash Out
Due to the Nor'easter slowing passing through central and eastern PA rendering fields unplayable, today's women's soccer match at Commonwealth opponent Messiah has been postponed. The two teams will now square off on Tuesday, October 27 at 7 PM at Messiah.
Arcadia holds on for 1-0 win over Albright
Glenside, PA: 10/14/09 - Stephanie Welch (Lebanon Twp., NJ/Moravian) was in the right place at the right time Wednesday afternoon as her 6th goal of the season helped Arcadia University women's soccer sneak past the Lions of Albright College 1-0 in Commonwealth Conference play in Glenside. Arcadia (11-0-3, 3-0 CC) remains undefeated through 14 games and stays atop the league rankings in a first place deadlock with defending champion Messiah, a team the Knights will face on Saturday at 3 PM.
Albright (4-7-2, 1-2 CC) entered today's game coming off a big 2-0 win at Elizabethtown over the weekend that saw sophomore keeper Olivia Guilano grab conference goalie of the week honors. Despite the Knights 17-6 advantage in shots, the Lions maintained textbook positioning through the entire game and saw Guilano come up with saves when she needed to, until the 58th minute when Welch played "Johnny on the Spot" for the Knights. Arcadia junior Janelle Jablonski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) lofted a header into the box that luckily found the foot of Welch who flicked the ball near post to end the scoreless game at 58:16, giving Arcadia a little breathing room. Although the Knights would nearly strike again on one of their game high 10 corner opportunities, Welch's goal would stand as the game winner.
Guilano made 8 saves but it was Arcadia's Jacki Law (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains Fanwood) who registered her 10th shutout of the season as her overall record improves to 10-0-3. The first year finished with 3 saves against the Lions.
Arcadia is on the road for their next two, first with Saturday's showdown in Grantham, before traveling to Widener University on Tuesday, Oct 20, both games Commonwealth match ups.

Glenside, PA: 10/10/09 - Junior midfielder Katie O'Malley (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) picked up her first goal of the season as the Knights handed Commonwealth Conference foe Lycoming College a 1-0 loss Saturday afternoon to remain undefeated on the season and take a 2-0 conference mark into Tuesday's home league match up with Albright at 4 PM.
Following a scoreless first half, Arcadia was awarded a free kick at 54:18 and the junior midfielder stepped up and sailed her shot into the goal box. Lycoming keeper Chelsea Powers came out to play the ball but misjudged it as the ball took one bounce in front, then over her head into the goal for a 1-0 Arcadia lead. Powers would end the game with 9 saves. Lycoming's Kaitlin Horn earned the Warriors best chance of the day after eluding a trio of Arcadia defenders, her shot found it's way into the hands of first year Arcadia keeper Jacki Law (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains Fanwood) who stonewalled the shot aside to keep the Warriors off the board.
Making five saves, Law earned her school-record setting 9th shutout of the season while having amassed 773 minutes of shutout soccer. Sophomores Brittany Drosdak (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) and Amy Lupfer (Andover, NJ/Newton) and first year Kyrastin Cook (Murraysville, PA/Ranklin Regional) held the Lycoming offense to just 4 shots as the Knights have held their past eight opponents scoreless, last allowing a goal on Sept. 9 against Ramapo.
Arcadia (10-0-3, 2-0 CC) remains unbeaten through 13 games and will face league powerhouse and defending Division III champion Messiah on Saturday, October 20 in Grantham. Lycoming drops to 6-7-1 and 0-2 in the Commonwealth.

Both goals were unassisted.
The Knights led in shots 13-8 while Rutgers Camden held the 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The second overtime saw opportunities come and go for both teams as the game ended in a draw with shutouts appropriately awarded to both goal keepers. Rao made 5 saves to Law's 13 for the Knights.
