Field Hockey concludes season with 6-0 win at Bryn Mawr
First-year Marilyn Beatty had a career day scoring four goals to lead the Knights over Bryn Mawr College. Beatty by the conclusion of the first half already had a hat trick in the books, and secured her fourth goal in the 53rd minute of play. Junior Caroline Champi and Sophomore Staci Faye each scored a goal a piece in the Knights effort.
Arcadia exploded this afternoon, coming off two very tough league games, and the Knights five seniors playing in their last game as collegiate, the offense was on full display. Taking advantage of every miscue by their opponent the Knights out shot Bryn Mawr, 30 to 14 for the game, while also garnering three more corner opportunities. It was the Knights who took initiative early and often, not allowing their opponents a mere chance steal momentum away.
Just three minutes into the game, taking a page out of many of their Commonwealth conference opponents the Knights broke through with their first goal, as Beatty found the back of the goal unassisted to put the Knights ahead for good. A little over 10 minutes later Beatty again found the goal, this time off a pass from Junior Ashley Griffith, giving Arcadia the 2-0 advantage. Within a minute of each other Champi and Beatty would score to give the Knights a 4-0 lead going into the half.
Unlike other days when the Knights would have the momentum in one half and then see it swing to their opponents side in another, Arcadia was in full control the entire 70 minutes of action. In the 45th minute of play Frye would score unassisted, which would be followed by Beatty's fourth goal of the day and Arcadia's 6th on the afternoon for a final tally of 6-0.
In goal Seniors Brittany Rasmussen and Rachel Palis split time, collecting 11 saves between the two in 70 minutes of play. The Knights conclude the season 5-12 overall.
Arcadia Battles, can't overcome Messiah; Fall 7-0
Glenside, PA: 10/29/09 - Messiah College entered today's contest with a perfect record and ranked #1 in the NCAA polls, and showed early how their earned such respect. Despite the scrappy defense of Arcadia, the Falcons rushed out to a 4-0 lead at the half and tacked on three more goals early in the second to defeat the Knights 7-0 in Commonwealth Conference action.
On paper the game between the Knights and Messiah would seem one sided at best but what fails to show was the heart, fight and determination Arcadia displayed throughout the 70 minutes of action. However, the Falcons in the end just proved too much for the Knights, shutting the Arcadia offense down completely, not allowing a single shot on goal for the entire contest to 33 shots for Messiah. Junior Julie Barton and Senior Elizabeth Ziegler each recorded 4 points on the afternoon with two goals and four assists between the two.
Prior to the start of today's game the Knights bid farewell to five senior student-athletes, Brittany Rasmussen, Rachel Palis, Luminita Hamilton, Joanna Born, and Crystal Delgado. Each playing in their final contest at Blankley Field. Rasmussen recorded a game-high 8 saves in 35 minutes of action and in her relief Palis recorded 4 saves. The Pride would tack on two more goals, all three off the stick of Sophomore Natalie Gifford, for a first half hat-trick. Albright again connected in the 83rd minute of play, scoring the game winning goal, for the 2-1 victory. The Knights fall to 4-10 overall, still searching for the first Commonwealth conference victory.
Both teams felt each other out early and entered into half-time deadlocked at 0-0. It wasn't until the 59th minute of play when the Knights would strike. Off a pass from junior Caroline Champi, sophomore Staci Faye positioned in front of the goal found an opening, pushing the ball to the back of the net and putting Arcadia ahead 1-0. The Knight defense would hold strong, fighting off several Albright attempts to tie the game, however, the Lions wouldn't go away, and in the 69th minute of play Albright finally broke through to tie the game.
Forced to regroup quickly after thinking they had the win in hand, the Knights came out in the overtime period on the attack. Pressuring the Lion defense and getting off two great shots on goal, only to be stymied by the Lion goalkeeper and defense. Arcadia's defense was equally impressive, however, they were unable to stop the scoring prowess of Gia Boscola, who netted for 11th goal of the season in game-winning fashion.

Field Hockey rallies for 3-2 victory
Glenside, PA: 10/14/09 - Arcadia (4-8) fell behind two goals early into the second half of play, only to rally with two quick goals by junior Ashley Griffith mid-way through the second period to tie the game and send it into sudden death. With just minutes left in the first overtime period, the Knights secured a penalty stroke and junior Ashley McCarthy hit the ball just high enough to clear the Immaculata goalie's head and give Arcadia the victory.
After playing to a scoreless tie in the first 35 minutes of action, the Mighty Macs of Immaculata (3-9) came out with a force offensively to start the second period of play. Immaculata caught the Knights defense off guard and just minutes into the second half would put themselves ahead 1-0. The Mighty Macs would add another insurance goal only minutes after the first goal, forcing Arcadia to call time out, finding themselves down 2-0.
Following the time-out the Knights came out with their own sense of urgency again forcing the issue and putting the pressure back on the defense of Immaculata. Griffith would come through the crowd in the circle and score the first Knights goal, pulling Arcadia within one goal of a tie. Griffith just minutes later would again find the back of the goal off a pass from classmate Adrienne Altera, for her second goal, tying the game at two apiece.
Both teams would have several opportunities to score in the following minutes, however, both defenses proved worthy pushing the game into a decisive sudden death overtime period. In the overtime, the Knights found themselves with several opportunities to score, forcing the defensive hand of Immaculata. With just a little over four minutes to play in the first overtime period, Arcadia would apply pressure right at the feet of the Immaculata goalie, forcing a penalty stroke. Arcadia's first score came off the stick of first-year Lauren Altera on a penalty stroke in the 18th minute of play. Altera was able to slide the ball right under the foot of Swarthmore goalie, Katie Ashmore, putting Arcadia ahead 1-0. Not even five minutes later into the action the Knights would strike again as first-year Lynn Beatty found a planted junior Ashley McCarthy next to goal and McCarthy powered the ball into the back of the goal for the 2-0 Knights lead.
Arcadia would take the 2-0 advantage into the second half of play, but knew an insurance goal would be key to hold off the scrappy Swarthmore squad. That insurance goal came in the eighth minute of second half action. Junior Ashley Griffith carried the ball into the circle and got off a great shot, however, Swarthmore's defense was ready kicked it away, right to the stick of junior Caroline Champi. Champi got her stick down, found the ball and promptly found the back of the goal off the rebound, putting the Knights ahead 3-0.
From there the Knights defense would look to hold onto the lead they worked so hard to garner. Swarthmore, intent on being more aggressive in the second half of play scored their first goal on a break-away as Sara McCabe found Hoa Pham streaking to goal, almost unstoppable for Knight keeper senior Brittany Rasmussen. Remaining aggressive Swarthmore would score a second time with just five minutes left to play. Arcadia's defense would be tested the entire last five minutes of play as Swarthmore kept the ball on the Arcadia side of the field, looking for an opportunity to score the game-tying goal. With the clock reading zero's Swarthmore had one last opportunity to tie the game off a corner, however, the Knight defense proved steady and knocked the ball out of the circle, securing the 3-2 victory for Arcadia.
