Arcadia University Women's Volleyball 2009 Season Preview
Glenside, PA:  8/27/09 -  Arcadia University Women’s Volleyball will enter their second season in the competitive Commonwealth Conference undergoing a rebuilding year with key players from last year’s squad lost to graduation and transfer.  After earning a Freedom Conference post season slot in 2007, the Knights first year in the Commonwealth Conference saw them finish just 1-5 (9-14 overall).  Their lone league win in 2008 came in a 3-1 victory over Albright College and fittingly, the two teams have been selected to finish the conference schedule tied for 6th place in the annual preseason coaches poll.  Defending Commonwealth champions Lebanon Valley were tabbed to repeat as league champions with Elizabethtown, Widener and Messiah rounding out the top four teams.

Eighth year head coach Tony Carpenter has brought in six first year players to accompany his returning core including middle hitter Delaney Dobson (Horsham, PA/Archbishop Wood).  Dobson brings championship experience to the Knights’ court having played a key role at Archbishop Wood High School, the 2008 PIAA Catholic League Champions.  First year Jessica Stoler (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) is expected to step into the starting setter position left void by the graduation of Rachel Glass ’09

Also lost to graduation is outside hitter Sam Schad ’08, however, Coach Carpenter returns both Natasha Wetten (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East) a junior with experience at both the outside and middle hitter positions and sophomore Hailey Barger (Sitka, AK/Sitka) at middle hitter.  Look for Wetten to lead the team in digs this season while Barger is expected to stand out as the team's as the top hitter and blocker.

Rounding out the returning lineup is Jennifer Ihle (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame), the lone senior on the squad and a solid utility player who can play opposite side, outside hitter and defensive specialist positions.  Three juniors bring game experience to the lineup and are expected to play key roles in the Knights rotation including libero/setter Christina DiMichele (Media, PA/Academy of Notre Dame), defensive specialist/libero Jackie Sentz (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) and outside hitter/opposite Kimberly Rossi (Berlin, MD/Stephen Decatur).

Joining Coach Carpenter on the sidelines this year will be first year assistant coach Cassie Dyer (University of Scranton ’06).  Dyer was a three-year starting setter for the University of Scranton where she helped her team to a pair of Freedom Conference championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. Dyer earned multiple All Conference honors and holds numerous Scranton Volleyball records.

The 2009 volleyball campaign is set to kickoff on Tuesday, September 1 at Misericordia University at 7 PM.  The Knights begin their Commonwealth schedule at defending conference champion Lebanon Valley on September 16.  The MASCAC Volleyball championship will begin on November 4 with semi final matches, with the championship set for November 7 (all games at high seed).
