Knights earn split on Senior Day
Philadelphia, PA: 5/1/10 - With 6 seniors playing their final games in an Arcadia uniform, the Knights took one of two this afternoon at Erny Field. Both games had great moments, however, in game two with the score tied heading into the bottom of the eighth inning the Knights bats livened and plated two, to take a 7-5 lead. Dan Morris playing in his final collegiate game was 4-6 on the afternoon, with 2 RBI and a run scored.
Senior Zac Spece took the mound in game one, also his final start of this collegiate career. Spece battled keeping the game close through 5 innings of play, only allowing two runs. A few unlikely breaks in the 6th inning cost Spece the game, as 6 runs came across off 2 errors in the field before the innings came to a close. This proved to be the difference in the game as Elizabethtown College took game one by the score of 9-3.
In game two Arcadia fell behind by an early run after the first inning, however responded well, scoring 5 runs over the course of the next two innings to take a 5-1 lead. The bottom of the second inning got started after Mike McElhatton reached base following being hit by the Elizabethtown pitcher. Next up Senior Jared Knable taking advantage of the last few at-bats of his career, laced a double to left field putting runners on second and third for classmate Joe Rafanelli. Rafanelli didn't waste any time, he also took a pitch to left field for a double, bring home McElhatton and Knable and giving Arcadia a 2-1 lead. The Knights would tack on another run in the inning for a 3-1 lead after two.
After holding the Blue Jays scoreless in the top of the third, Arcadia would look to increase it's lead in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, McElhatton stepped up and singled to right center, followed by a walk to Knable, putting two runners on again for Rafanelli. And again Rafanelli would deliver, powering the ball to dead center field for a 2 RBI triple, and a 5-1 lead for the Knights.
The Blue Jays however didn't waste any time getting right back into the ball game, putting together a 4-run top of the fourth to tie the game at 5-5.
The game would remain tied through 5 1/2 as both teams went scoreless in the fifth and the Blue Jays went three up three down in the top of the sixth.
Down to their final two at-bats of the season, Arcadia seized the moment. With two out and a runner on second, Morris stepped to the plate looking to get a pitch he could drive into the gap. Morris patient at the plate, got hold of one sending it into left center field for an RBI double, giving Arcadia the 6-5 lead and in need of only 3 outs for the victory. Not satisfied, Rich Schlamowitz wanted to help out his own cause on the mound, and sent a double to almost the exact same sport Morris found. Morris would score and Arcadia grabbed a 7-5 lead heading into the top of the seventh.
Ever mindful of the Blue Jays batters capabilities the Knights took the field focused and determined to pull out the victory. With two outs, Arcadia could sense the victory however, E-town found a hole in the infield for a single, bringing the tying run to the plate. Calm and poised, Schlamowitz worked the plate, and finally got Elizabethtown to pop out weakly to third for the final out.
On a beautiful day at Erny Field, Arcadia's seniors were able to secure a special moment for their memories, winning the final game of the season at home. Elizabethtown will continue playing as they locked up the third spot in the Commonwealth play-offs set to begin next week. Arcadia finishes the season 9-29 overall and 2-14 in league play.

Baseball drop two at Messiah
Grantham, PA: 4/24/10 - Completing the three-game series at Messiah College Saturday afternoon, Arcadia University fell to the Falcons 6-2 in game one and 10-3 in the finale. The Knights five runs in the two games came off only nine hits as the Messiah pitching staff was solid the entire afternoon. Arcadia falls to 8-27 on the season and 1-12 in the Commonwealth, while Messiah improves to 18-15 and 7-8 in the league.
In game one Arcadia jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning. The Knights lead-off man Matt Pempkowski got the game started with a single, and promptly stole second to put Arcadia in good position to grab the early lead. Dan Morris would deliver a single putting men on first and third with only one out, and Arcadia's RBI leading Rich Schlamowitz heading to the plate. As he has done all season, Schlamowitz singled home Pempkowski, giving Arcadia a quick 1-0 lead in the first. A walk to Kyle Jackson would load the bases for Mike McElhatton who drove home the second run of the inning for Arcadia off a long sacrifice fly to left, plating Morris, and putting the Knights up 2-0.
Unfortunately the two run opening inning would be the only runs Arcadia would score in game one, as Messiah answered with one run in each of the six innings they were to bat to take the game 6-2. Three of Arcadia's six hits in the opener would come in that first inning.
In game two Arcadia would again grab the early lead, 1-0 in the first innings of play. This time Arcadia would use its speed on the base paths and a wild start fielding by the Falcons to manufacture its early run. However, similar to game one Arcadia's scoring would be too few and far between in this game as their next run wouldn't cross the plate until the top of the sixth. Meanwhile Messiah would score 7 runs between the 2nd and 5th innings to grab the lead, while following the Arcadia scoring top the sixth with 3 runs of their on in the bottom half of the inning.
Arcadia will look to get back to swinging the bats well Wednesday April 28th when they play a home game in Delaware, Coach Brian Pugh's home state, at Frawley Stadium, home to the Wilmington Blue Rockets of the Carolina League, a Kansas City Royals affiliate. The game will be played under the lights for a 7 pm first pitch.
Falcons shut down Knight bats; Take game one 12-4
Philadelphia, PA: 4/23/10 - A day after the Knights pounded out 16 hits on the road, Arcadia worked to get 12 hits however was unable to string together enough to get past Messiah College in Commonwealth action. Messiah (16-15, 5-8) and Arcadia (8-24, 1-12) will meet again tomorrow for a double-header to complete the 3 game series.
Messiah jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the top of the first and never looked back, utilizing strong defensive play behind a solid complete game outting by Falcon starting pitcher to take game one of the series.
Arcadia would manufactor one run in the bottom of the first to close the gap to 4-1 after the first. Messiah would have an answer, after both teams went scoreless in the 2nd, the Falcons scored six runs over the next four innings of play to stretch their lead to 12-2.
The Knights would put together a small rally in the bottom of the eighth, plating two runners and making it an eight run game, however, Arcadia would go quietly in the ninth, securning the 12-4 victory for Messiah College.
Jerry Smith, Mike McElhatton, Kyle Jackson, and Matt Pempkowski all had 2 hit afternoon for Arcadia. Dan Morris continued his strong play with a 1-3 outting and 2 RBI.
Morris, Jackson's two home runs not enough; Eagles defeat Knights in walk-off fashion
St. David's, PA: 4/22/10 - Arcadia University (8-23) traveled to Eastern College (18-12) Thursday afternoon, for a rematch of Knights victory earlier this month. The two teams combined for 34 runs, 33 hits, and 8 home runs, the last home run in the bottom the tenth to win the game for the Eastern Eagles, 18-16. Dan Morris was 2-4, with 6 RBI off two monster home runs, Kyle Jackson finished the day 3-5, 3 RBI and 2 home runs of his own.
A scoreless first inning would be the rarity in this ballgame, as each starting pitcher was able to come out of the inning untouched. However, after the Knights again went quietly in the top of the second, the Eagles were able to push three runs across the plate and take the early lead. In response, Arcadia in the top of the third used a combination of a walk and four hits to plate four and take the early 4-3 lead. Following a walk to lead off the inning, Jerry Smith (3-6, 2 RBI, 3 runs) doubled to left field putting runners of second and third for Matt Pempkowski (2-5, 3 RBI, 2 runs). Seizing the moment Pempkowski roped a 2 RBI single down the left field line for the Knights first two runs on the afternoon. Marc Gottfried (2-5, RBI, 2 runs) would follow with a single of his own, advancing the runner to third. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Morris would score Arcadia's third run of the inning. The fourth run would come off a fielders choice, to give Arcadia the lead.
After a scoreless Eagle half of the third, Arcadia would stretch it's 4-3 lead with an exciting top of the fourth. The Knights first two hitters would get aboard via walks putting Arcadia in good position for another big inning. Smith looking to advance the runners to second and third, laid down a perfect bunt which none of the Eagles could field, beating it out for a single, and loading the bases with no outs. Pempkowski would next deliver a sacrifice fly to score Mike McElhatton. A successful double steal attempt again put two Arcadia runners in scoring position for Gottfried who singled to left, scoring Jason Heryla. With the score already in Arcadia's favor at 7-3, Morris stepped to the plate with a runner on and got a hold of a pitch and hammered it over the left field fence for a 2-run homer, extending the lead to 9-3. Following a fly out to record the second Knight out and a pitching change, Jackson wasted no time introducing the new Eagle pitching to the game as he also hit one out over the left field wall, for the second Arcadia homer of the inning, and a 10-3 advantage through 3 1/2 innings of play.
Arcadia's big half of the fourth, obviously inspired Eastern's hitters as they came to bat in the bottom of the innings very aggressive, smacking two home runs of their own,one to center and another to left center, and narrowing the lead to 10-6 after four.
Poised to get back momentum, Arcadia would use the long ball as an exclamation point for the inning. Again the first two hitters would reach base for the Knights, and Smith again would come through, this time lacing a 2 RBI single to center field, quickly pushing the lead back to 12-6. Two hitters later, Morris stepped to the plate with runners on second and third, another RBI situation, and again placed the Eagles pitch over the left field wall for his second homer in as many at-bats, this time the 3-run variety, capping a 5-run top of the fifth for Arcadia.
Eagles pitching would settle in from the 5th inning onward, allowing only one more run to cross for Arcadia over 5 innings of work, however they found themselves in a 9-run hole at 15-6. Both teams went scoreless in the sixth, and the Knights would remain quiet through the top of the seventh, however, Eastern's bats would find life. The Eagles would send 12 men to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, scoring 6 runs on 4 hits, and closing the lead to 15-12.
Arcadia would get one run back in the top of the eighth, off the second home run of the game for Jackson, adding an insurance run for a 16-12 lead heading into the final inning a half of regulation.
The lead however would not hold up as Eastern scored 4 runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 16, heading into the ninth.
Each team would put runners on base in the ninth inning, however, neither team could push a run across sending the game into extras. Arcadia would again put two runners on in the top of the tenth with less than two outs, but just like in the ninth were unable capitalize and ended the inning with both runners left on base.
Arcadia got the first Eagle hitter to fly out to left to start the bottom of the 10th inning for the first out, however the next hitter doubled down the left field line, putting a runner in scoring position with one out. In a game to this point had already seen 7 home runs, it was only fitting the game would end with one as well, and it did just that. The next Eastern batter stepped to the plate and send the game-winning home run over the center field wall and Eastern roured back to win 18-16.
What was by the far the most exciting game of the year for both teams, ended with Arcadia hitting a season hit 4 home runs, and 6 players with multi-hit afternoons. Each team sent five pitchers to the mound in an attempt to stifle the other's offense, but on this day the bats were all the talk. In addition to the 8 combined home runs, there were also 4 combined doubles, for a total of 12 extra-base hits.
Arcadia will next take swing at Commonwealth for Messiah College, Friday April 23 in a single game starting at 3:30 PM. The Knights will then travel to Messiah Saturday April 24th for the final two games of the 3-game series between the two squads. That double-header is set to begin at noon.
Baseball guts out weekend, take two at Gallaudet
Competing in their second double-header in as many days and fourth and fifth games in 3 days, Arcadia University's baseball team swept Sunday's games in Washington, DC. Mike McElhatton (4-8, 3 RBI) and Matt Pempkowski (5-8, 3 RBI) both had huge days for the Knights to help bring home the victories.
In game one Arcadia got off to a hot start, with lead off man Pempkowski reaching base and subsequently stealing second and third to put the Knights in good position for the early lead. In in the inning Arcadia would capitalize on poor control by Gallaudet's starting pitcher, and a clutch 2 RBI single by David Kutteroff to take the early 3-0 lead. However Gallaudet would answer back with 3 runs of its own in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 3-3.
Two runs in the top of the third by the Knights would again give them the lead, but again Gallaudet would fight back, scoring an answering run in the bottom of the third and the tying run in the bottom of the fifth, deadlocking the game at 5-5.
With the game tied heading into the final two innings of play, the Knights looked to seize control of the game. With two outs in the top of the sixth, Pempkowski singled to left field, reached second on an error by the pitching trying to steal, then stole third to put the go-ahead run in scoring position. Following a walk to Nick Petroski, the Gallaudet pitcher trying to keep the Knight base runners close would be called for a balk, send Petroski to second and Pempkowski home with the go-ahead run.
Arcadia would then lock up the game in the top of the seventh, sending 11 men to the plate while scoring 8 runs on 6 hits. Gallaudet would go quietly in the bottom of the seventh as Adam Planamento (4 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 KO) picked up the win for the Knights.

Dan Morris reached base after being hit by a pitch, followed by Rich Schlamowitz (3-5, 2 runs scored, ). LVC completes sweep, take two from Knights
Annville, PA - 4/10/10: Arcadia traveled to Lebanon Valley for the final two games of a three game series between the two squads this afternoon. The Knights hoping to grab one of the two in the doubleheader, fell 7-2 in the opener and 12-0 in the second game, for a LVC series sweep.
In the opener, the Dutchmen touched up Knight's starter Zach Spece for five runs in the opening three innings and two more in the sixth to take a commanding 7-0 into the decisive seventh inning. Attempting to rally in the top of the seventh and force extras, Arcadia started off the inning with a single by Kyle Jackson, followed by an RBI double off the bat of Mike McElhatton, giving the Knights their first run of the afternoon. After two straight outs, the Knights attempting to re-start their rally with a single by Marc Gottfried scoring McElhatton and plating the Knights second run. Unfortunately the Knight rally would end there as LVC would secure the third and final out, for a 7-2 Dutchmen victory.
Game two would prove much of the same as the Dutchmen pitchers were able to silence the Knights bats, while jumping on Arcadia pitching early. LVC already holding a 3-0 advantage heading into the bottom of the fourth, put together six run inning and breaking the game wide open. The Dutchmen would put three more runs on the board in the fifth, for their final tally of 12.
The Knights were never able to put together a string of hits in the second outing, thus falling 12-0. McElhatton, Jackson, and Jared Knable each went 2-6 on the day to lead the Arcadia offense. Rich Schlamowitz took the loss in the second game after going four innings giving up eight runs on seven hits.
Arcadia will have a short break before their next game, when they travel to another Commonwealth opponent Alvernia April 16th.

Lebanon Valley right fielder Aaron Mills had a huge day at the plate for the Dutchmen, with a 4-5 perfomance including a grand slam home run in the top of the eighth inning to stretch the LVC lead to 11-4. Mills would finish with 5 RBIs on the afternoon.
The Knights took an early 3-2 lead following the bottom of the third inning. Arcadia's lead would however be short lived as LVC put up six consecutive runs before the Knights would cross the plate again in the bottom of the seventh. From that point it was catch-up ball for the Knights, who assembled strong seventh and eighth innings, however those efforts weren't enough to overcome a seven run deficit after 7 1/2 innings, the largest of the day.
Mike McElhatton had an efficient 3 for 4 day at the plate for the Knights in the loss, one of five Knight players with an RBI. Rich Schlamowitz also continued his current hot streak, entering the game batting .425, he increased his average with a 2 for 4 day including an RBI.

Obviously when you can be as successful on the bases as we were today, and knock the ball around a little bit, you put yourself in a position to score runs. I thought both starters did a good job today. Zac Spece just fell victim to timely hitting in the first game, but did exactly what we ask all of our pitchers to do in keeping us in a position to win. Rich was great pitching with a lead, and even though he had the five walks, they didn’t really come back to haunt him.”

The Panthers of Birmingham-Southern coming in with five game under their belt and a lone loss, proved to much for the Knights. First-Year Jerry Smith led the Knights in his opening campaign driving in two runs while going 1-4 at the plate.
BSC jumped ahead 8-0 after three innings, after compiling a 6 run third inning, putting the Knights in a significant hole. Arcadia would answer with two runs in the top of the fourth, and another in the top of sixth inning, however over the same stretch the Panthers posted five runs, building their advantage to 13-3 after six innings of play.
Arcadia would have one additional run left in them, making their largest push of the day into contention, posting three runs on four hits in the top of the eighth inning, however were unable to capitilize leaving the bases loaded, and going three up and three down in the top of the ninth to end the game.
The Knights return to the field tomorrow for a pair of games, opening the day with Huntingdon College at Samford University at 11:30 am, and returning to Birmingham Southern for the afternoon cap against BSC at 3:30 pm.

Pugh cites healthy bodies and pitching as keys for 2010
With the start of the 2010 season, the Knights have one goal – IMPROVE! How does the team look to rebound off a season in which they only tallied five victories after qualifying for the MAC Freedom Conference tournament in 2008? Head Coach Brian Pugh says there are a couple keys.
“One of the things we feel really hurt us last year was the big inning. There were some games that we were in, or even had the lead, and just failed to hold it.” Other factors the second-year skipper feels will make a difference: “We need to stay healthy.” The Knights battled through injuries all year including the loss of two outfielders within a week. One of those, David Kutteroff '12, looks to be close to a full recovery from a torn ACL which ended his freshman campaign in only the fourth game of the season. “We were really excited to see David get off to a quick start, and thought he would end up as a mainstay in our lineup. Unfortunately, we lost him for the year. He’s been working hard through his rehab program, and should be ready to go soon” says Pugh. Finally, the thought of having a roster with a year’s experience should help. “We had guys who had never played at the college level, or had somewhat limited experience, playing everyday. Hopefully that year of maturation will be huge this coming season.”
The Knights will rely on several returners from the 2009 lineup to carry their offense. Senior Matt Pempkowski will again sit at the top of the lineup after putting together his most productive season in Glenside which earned him second team all conference honors. Dan Morris 'GR, along sophomores Mike McElhatton, Rich Schlamowitz, Kutteroff, and Adam Planamento look to be in the middle of the order. Filling out the lineup card will be first-year catcher Jerry Smith, second baseman Nick Petroski, and transfer outfielder Kyle Jackson '12. Arcadia will also receive help from the bench from sophomore Marc Gottfried, junior Jason Heryla, and seniors Jared Knable and Joe Rafanelli.
The biggest factor in the Knights aspirations lies on the mound. “It’s really going to come down to how effectively we can pitch this season. We’re pretty comfortable and confident that we’ll be able to score runs and make things happen offensively. In order for us to have more success we have to pitch better than we did in ‘09” says Pugh.
AU returns two conference starters this year in senior Zac Spece and sophomore Steve Romond. Romond, who struggled last year with command, had an impressive fall before suffering a broken ankle in December. He is slated to make his return in mid-February. Spece, who picked up one of the Knights two Commonwealth wins against Widener pitched relatively well in 2009, despite being tagged with losses. Senior Dan Manning looks to be the go to guy out the pen this year, but will need to be more effective in throwing strikes. Schlamowitz is penciled in as the number three starter, after seeing most of his innings come in relief a year ago. Heryla, Knable, Kutteroff, and Morris will all see innings this year as well.
Arcadia opens up the 2010 campaign on February 13th when they travel to the nation’s capital to take on the Gallaudet Bison in a non-conference double header. The home opener is set for the following Saturday (2/20) when they play host to the Beavers from City College of New York. AU will also be making two trips this spring, as they head to Birmingham, Alabama where they will play four games beginning February 25th, and then off to North Carolina and Virginia where they will play four more games during spring break. Commonwealth play is set to begin on March 21 against Albright College in Reading.
