2007 Outlook

The 2007 version of the Arcadia Knights sport a new head coach but someone who is no stranger to the program.  Former four-year AU standout (1998-2002) Kevin Woodbridge, takes over for Stan Exeter after serving the last four years as assistant coach. Woodbridge will have big shoes to fill and with a wealth of talent returning from last years regular season Pennsylvania Athletic Conference(PAC) championship squad, this years expectations will be no different from past;  a league Championship.

The seniors on this year’s team won the PAC as freshmen and would like nothing more than to go out on top once again in Arcadia’s final season as a member of the PAC before they make the move to the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC).

The offense is lead by three time All-PAC selection, senior, John Connell.  Connell has been a stalwart in the line up since his freshman year and before he closes out his career he will be atop the Knights record book in many offensive categories.   Also boosting the offense are middle infielders John Curreri 09’ and Kenny Spangenberg 08’.  Curreri, a transfer from Rhode Island University was a pleasant surprise for the Knights last season finishing up at .377.  After a slow start to the 06’ season, Spangenberg elevated his game as the season went on finishing the season at .355; both players garnered All PAC Honors. Seniors John Maxon and Dave Morris are looking to come off very strong fall seasons and set the table this spring for the big bats behind them in the order.

Tim Smith 09’, Dan Morris 09’ and freshman Nick Goetz are competing for the hot corner.  Smith is coming off a solid freshman season that was cut short by a knee injury.  Morris and Goetz are both new to the program but both bring much needed power to the line up as well as a strong glove.   Depth is not an issue as Rich Greenfield 08’, Steve Clark 10’, and Steve Chobert 08’ all provide Coach Woodbridge options at several positions as well as the option to platoon players.

Joining Maxon in the outfield will be Eric Console 08’.  Console has started for the Scarlet Knights the previous two seasons and will continue to patrol centerfield.  Anthony Champi 09’, Matt Pempkowski 10’, Mike Hennessey 09’, Jim Richards 09’ and Andy Bella will give the Knights many different looks to help create match ups that favor the Arcadia’s line up.

The Knights will be looking for one of the young backstops to step up and fill the big shoes left behind. by the graduation of two senior cathcers in 2006.  Vying for the spot are Frank Sharp 09’, Jason Bishop 10’, Kevin Kolodjie 10’, and Jason Karlowski 10’. All four catchers bring something to the table and will help to handle the large pitching staff.

The Knights pitching staff goes fourteen deep and it all starts with three time all PAC selection Tyler Pennepacker.  Pennepacker enters his senior year holding various Arcadia pitching records while also closing in on several more.  Transfers Alex Gelegotis (Wingate 10’) and Joe Cooney (Bloomsburg 08’) are both coming off surgeries but if healthy have frontline starter capabilities. John Squire 08’ is looking to make the move from the bullpen to conference starter as well.  Squire had a strong fall and will be vying for one of the weekend starts.   Steve Chobert 08’ returns as the teams' closer and with improved velocity looks to lower his already stellar 2.89 ERA.  Returning letter winners Steve Vassalotti 09’, Rich Ryan 09’, Tim Smith 08’, Mike Ramsden 08’ and Andy Bella will all be looked upon to fill numerous roles.  The freshman class of Jared Knable, Zach Spece, Dan Manning, and Joe Rafanelli will add depth coming out of the bullpen.

“The PAC continues to get stronger from top to bottom every year and the fact that our league received an at large bid on top of our conference champion shows that the committee recognizes the quality of the PAC” said Woodbridge.  Woodbridge adds, “If we go out and play mistake-free baseball we will hopefully put ourselves in a position to win every time we take the field.”
