ESL Program Specialist Certificate

Offered at King of Prussia and Glenside campuses.

Arcadia University has been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education as a training program provider for the ESL Program Specialist Certificate. The ESL courses also may be taken as electives in a Master of Education degree program.

Admission Requirements

In addition to the general graduate admissions requirements, the following program-specific requirements apply:

  • A graduate application, including personal statements, to be completed online at
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a recommended GPA of 3.0 or better
  • One official transcript from each college, university or professional school attended. Transfer credits included on a transcript must include grades earned; if not, an official transcript from the original school must be submitted. Transcripts must be sent from the issuing school in a sealed envelope and contain the appropriate signatures and seals to be considered official.
  • Two letters of recommendation of a professional, not personal nature. If the student has been out of school five years or fewer, at least one letter must come from a professor.

Certificate Program (15 credits)

Candidates for ESL certification will follow a set curriculum consisting of four courses. These courses will address the areas of expertise that are required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Required Courses (A minimum of four courses must be taken at Arcadia.)

  • ED 622 ESL Teaching Multilingual and Multicultural Literacies
  • ED 623 ESL Multilingual and Multicultural Assessments
  • ED 624 ESL Understanding Language Learning
  • ED 625 ESL Language, Diversity and Schooling
  • ED 629 ESL Theory and Practice of TESOL


Due to changes by PDE, Arcadia University has created an application packet to facilitate the understanding and processing of the ESL certificate. Arcadia University provides a Letter of Training Completion to the student who has completed all requirements, and the student submits the application for the certificate to the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
