Each year, beginning with New Student Orientation, Arcadia students, faculty, staff and alumni perform thousands of hours of community service in the tri-county area. Arcadia also organizes an Alternative Spring Break service learning experience. On March 14-20, 38 students and two staff members will go to Tijuana, Mexico to help Esperanza International rebuild homes.
“We provide assistance to the communities’ requests for volunteer aide,” says Cindy Rubino, Coordinator of Community Service. “Ongoing projects such as the America Reads Program where this year 72 students served at nine different sites to offer assistance to the surrounding community, serve community needs.” Other services projects also include:
- Empty Bowl Benefit Dinner
- Alternative Winter Break Trips
- Alternative Spring Break Trips
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
- Dr. Seuss Day
- Operation Holiday
- Interfaith Hospitality Network
Arcadia also was named to the 2008 honor roll. The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, launched in 2006, annually recognizes institutions of higher education for their commitment to and achievement in community service. The President’s Honor Roll increases the public’s awareness of the contributions that colleges and their students make to local communities and the nation as a whole. President Obama has pledged to make service a central cause of his administration and wishes to commemorate the significant role that higher institutions, their students, staff, and faculty play in helping to solve pressing social problems in the nation’s communities.
