Arcadia University Creative Writing Institute Kicks Off with Free Literary Reading

Glenside, Pa.—June, 9, 2010—Arcadia University is offering an evening of literary and poetry readings by Richard Wertime and Quincy Scott Jones in conjunction with a summer Creative Writing Institute. The literary reading, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 9, in the Grey Towers Castle Rose Room.

  • Jokes, Enjambments, and all that Jazz.  Part lecture, part performance, this presentation by Quincy Scott Jones, performance poet and Adjunct Professor of English, seeks to show how non-literary influences can lend themselves to poetic expression.  Poetry goes from the page, to stage, and back to performing on paper.
  • The Writer’s First Book: The Mystery—and the Magic!  Dr. Richard Wertime, Professor of English, will be talking about how a writer’s first book always creates anxiety and excitement—both in the composing process and in the publishing process that follows. Author of Citadel on the Mountain: A Memoir of Father and Son, 2001 winner of the James A. Michener Memorial Prize, Wertime will share some of the highs and the lows, the frustrations and triumphs that characterize first-book publication.

To R.S.V.P. for the free, public literary reading, please contact Blair Morse, School of Continuing Studies, 215-517-2577 or arcadiaonline@arcadia.edu.

The Creative Writing Institute features a weekend course offered July 9, 10 and 11 plus four weeks of online projects.  The class carries 4 credits for undergraduates and 3 credits for graduates at a discounted price of $899. This institute is for intermediate to advanced creative writers who want to hone their skills over four weeks of discussion and workshops. Students will get personal feedback from Arcadia’s Creative Writing faculty and their peers during both the weekend on campus and four weeks of online workshops.
