Arcadia University Provost Announces Faculty Promotions, Sabbaticals and Awards

Glenside, Pa.—June 25, 2010—Dr. Steve O. Michael, Provost and Academic Vice President, has announced the Promotion and Tenure Committee decisions from 2009-10, including six promotions, four sabbaticals, and eight awards. No tenure decisions were made.

Dr. Carlos Ortiz, Chair of Computer Science and Mathematics, was promoted from Associate Professor to full Professor, effective Sept. 1, 2010.

Promoted from Assistant to Associate Professor, effective Sept. 1, 2010, were Dr. Ana María García, Chair of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice; Dr. Warren Haffar, Interim Dean of International Affairs and Director of International Peace and Conflict Resolution; Karen Misher, Art and Design; Dr. Graciela Slesaransky-Poe, Education; and Dr. Xizhong Zheng, Computer Science and Mathematics.

Sabbaticals were granted to Dr. Pradyumna Chauhan, Professor of English (fall 2010, minor sabbatical); Misher, (2010-11 academic year, major sabbatical); Alan Powell, Associate Professor of Communications (2010-11 academic year, major sabbatical); and Dr. Peter Siskind, Assistant Professor of History and International Studies (fall 2010, pre-tenure sabbatical).
This year’s Adjunct Faculty Teaching Award was made to Vance R. Kincade Jr., History and International Studies, at the Honors Convocation in March.

The 2010-11 Ellington Beavers Fund for Intellectual Inquiry Faculty Award was awarded to Dr. Sheryl T. Smith, Assistant Professor of Biology, at the Graduate Commencement in May.

The 2010-11 Dr. Thomas P. Dougherty Endowed Faculty-Student Research Awards were given to Dr. Yanxia Jia, Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Mathematics, and Dr. Christopher A. Binckley, Assistant Professor of Biology.

The 2010-11 Christian R. & Mary F. Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching was presented to Dr. Doreen E. Loury, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Director of Act 101, at Honors Convocation in March.

Dr. Bette Goldstone, Professor of Education, was named the 2010 Professor of the Year.

The Steinbrucker Award was made to Gregg F. Moore, Associate Professor of Art and Design, taking effect July 1, 2010.
