An evocative retelling of Ovid’s ancient tales, each story grapples with change’s impact on our lives. This magical anthology still rings with timeless commonality, as Ovid himself predicted around 1 A.D. when he wrote “Now stands my task accomplished such a work as not the wrath of Jove, no fire nor sword nor the devouring ages can destroy.”

Performance dates and times:

  • Oct. 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29 at 8 p.m.
  • Oct. 22, 23, 29, 30 at 2 p.m.

Other performances scheduled for the 2011-2012 theater season are:

The Swing of the Sea

Written by Molly Hagen
Directed by Mark Wade
Dec. 1–11
MainStage

Mysterious and whimsical in equal parts, this play intimately explores what it means to be an adolescent facing the “slings and arrows of outrageous fortune” for the first time. Newly out from under their parents’ explanation of everything, Boots and Eggs grapple with the realities of adult-size loss and yearning.

Performance dates and times:

  • Dec. 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10 at 8 p.m.
  • Dec. 3, 4, 10, 11 at 2 p.m.

Girl Science

Written by Larry Loebell
Directed by Rebecca Wright
Feb. 23–March 4
MainStage

Lois, historian, selects her great aunt, Dr. Johanna Vernon, an eminent biologist and “forgotten pioneer of science,” as the subject for her new book. Reluctant at first, Johanna soon shares stories from her professional life and seemingly charmed girlhood. But was it? When Lois inadvertently uncovers a tragic truth, both women are changed forever

Performance dates and times:

  • Feb.  23, 24, 25 and Mar. 1, 2, 3 at 8 p.m.
  • Feb.  25, 26 and Mar. 3, 4 at 2 p.m.

The Children’s Hour

Written by Lillian Hellman
Directed by Kathryn Petersen
April 19-29
MainStage

Mix a maladjusted student’s lie with a community’s willingness to believe it and the result is a perfect recipe for havoc. Mary insists they did. Bud did they? Will adults stop to consider the source? Set in an all-girls’ boarding school in 1930s New England, is a cautionary tale about the power of suggestion spread by unhindered gossip.

Performance dates and times:

  • April 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28 at 8 p.m.
  • April 21, 22, 28, 29 at 2 p.m.
