Glenside, Pa.—February 20, 2013—Arcadia University’s School of Education will bring together educators, families, high school and college students, faculty and staff on Friday, March 22 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a conference on Creating Safe and Welcoming Schools. Participants will learn how to create safe, welcoming, and affirming K-12 spaces for LGBTQ children, youth, adults, and allies. Register online.

The School of Education at Arcadia also is proud to announce a new graduate course: ED 675 Creating Safe and Welcoming Schools. Individual students are welcome to enroll, but school teams are strongly encouraged. Students will complete gender and sexuality school climate needs assessments and develop an action plan for the next academic year.  Topics will include supporting transgender or gender nonconforming students; addressing homophobic bullying and sexual harassment; advising gay-straight alliances; and partnering with LGBTQ families. These will be addressed in developmentally and culturally appropriate ways for professionals working with, and families parenting, K-12 student populations.
