At Arcadia University: Award-winning Author Presents on Why She Writes, March 21
GLENSIDE, Pa. (Feb. 19, 2014) — Award-winning author Jennifer Bryant will speak at Arcadia University on Friday, March 21, for two events—one aimed at aspiring authors at 2:30 p.m., and one titled “Why I Write” at 7:30 p.m. The events, free and open to the public, are part of the University’s Visiting Writers Series and will be held in the Grey Towers Castle (450 S. Easton Road, Glenside). A book signing, featuring a selection of her books for purchase, will follow the evening presentation.
Bryant has written books aimed at readers of all ages. Her children’s book, A Splash of Red: The Life and Art of Horace Pippin (2013 Knopf), illustrated by Melissa Sweet, was chosen as one of the Robert F. Sibert 2014 Honor Books. Her biography of William Carlos Williams, A River of Words: The Story of William Carlos Williams, also illustrated by Sweet, received a Caldecott Honor. Her novel in verse, Ringside 1925: Views from the Scopes Trial, is an Oprah Recommended Book for ages 12 and up. Other titles include Pieces of Georgia (IRA Young Adult Choices Pick),The Trial (on the 1935 Lindbergh kidnapping trial, was a Borders New Voices Pick), Kaleidoscope Eyes (a 1960’s-era novel, which earned a Junior Library Guild Selection), The Fortune of Carmen Navarro (Paterson Prize for Young People), Georgia’s Bones (celebrating the life of artist Georgia O’Keeffe), and Music for the End of Time (based on a true World War II story).
Bryant earned a Master of Arts degree in English from Arcadia University in 2000. She holds a bachelor’s degree and an honorary doctorate from Gettysburg College. Bryant has taught writing and children’s literature at West Chester University and Bryn Mawr College and gives school and public lectures throughout the year.
