Arcadia University men’s soccer team registered a 3-0 victory over Newbury College on Sunday in the championship match of St. Joseph’s (L.I.) College’s Gary Smith Invitational. Junior forward Matt Ross and senior keeper Seth Shoap were named the tournament’s Offensive and Defensive MVPs, respectively, while sophomore forward Ricardo Margolles was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Ross scored two goals and assisted on another in the tournament, while Shoap turned away each of the six shots on goal he faced. Margolles was a factor in all three Arcadia goals in the title game, setting up the first two before adding one of his own in the closing minute.

The contest was played fairly even at first as the two teams felt each other out in the first 45 minutes before going into the break tied at 0-0. The Knights (2-0-1) held a 6-4 edge in shots and a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The second half was a different story as Arcadia dominated the frame, scoring all three goals while taking 10 of the 12 shots in the period.

Daulton Rutter scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 52nd-minute with his first goal of the season off a corner kick. Ross then added his second goal in as many days after depositing Margolles’ crossing pass from the right side of the box into the net with 3:32 left in the match, and senior midfielder Alex Wells fed the ball to Margolles who capped the scoring with just 14 seconds remaining.

Shoap had three saves while recoding his third shutout of the season and improving his record to 2-0-1. Antonios Tran has six saves in taking the loss for the Nighthawks (1-4-0) in his first action of the season.

The Knights will return to action Wednesday, Sept. 10, when they travel to Immaculata University for a 4 p.m. non-conference match.
