As the Greek myth goes, Orpheus and Eurydice are young newlyweds the night that Eurydice dies. Orpheus makes a deal with Hades, ruler of the Underworld, to have his wife released from the Underworld on the condition that he does not look back as he leads Eurydice to the land of the living. Just before finishing the trial, though, he gives in to temptation, never reuniting with Eurydice. Supposedly. Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice, opening on Arcadia’s MainStage Theater Feb. 19 at 8 p.m., presents an updated version of this ancient Greek myth. The production retells the story of Orpheus and Eurydice from her point-of-view; in doing so, this complicates the tale of love and loss, as Eurydice is faced with difficult choices concerning not only her husband, but also her father.
