Santangelo Publishes on Teaching to Common Core

Tanya E. Santangelo, assistant professor of education, along with two co-authors from Arizona State University, published “Research-Based Writing Practices and the Common Core: Meta-Analysis and Meta-Synthesis” in the June issue of The Elementary School (University of Chicago Press).

The paper presents methods that can be used to meet Common Core State Standard writing objectives for kindergarten through 8th grade. The new standards, according to the article, “identified what students need to master, [but] did not provide guidance on how teachers are to meet these writing benchmarks.”

Among the practices suggested: drop traditional grammar instruction, such as repetitive memorization of rules or sentence diagrams; use word processors; and encourage students to write longer assignments more frequently.
