From Feb. 18 to 28, Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice faculty members Drs. Ana Maria Garcia, Anne Lee, and Favian Alejandro Martín presented research alongside students at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa. The work ranged in topics from wrongful convictions to mass surveillance.

During their visit to South Africa, Arcadia students and faculty spoke with their South African counterparts about social problems the country faces. Poverty due to continuing effects of apartheid was at the forefront of the discussion, which became apparent when the Arcadia group visited different townships of Soweto.

“It was completely eye-opening because I had never experienced anything in my life quite like the South Africa trip,” said Samantha Compitello ’17. “From severe culture shocks to awesome outings, I learned more in one week than I could have in an entire semester.”
