Dr. Jeffrey Shultz, who retired as professor of Education and coordinator of 5-year programs in May 2016, has been named Professor Emeritus at Arcadia University. This distinction recognizes his innovative teaching style, promotion of multiculturalism on campus, and years of service to the University community.  

Hired as chair of Education in 1985, Dr. Shultz was a key figure in the development of Arcadia’s education and international programs. As assistant provost for Special Projects and General Education Program coordinator, he proposed segments of Arcadia’s undergraduate curriculum—including Preview, the Global Connections courses, and the Crossing Boundaries requirement—that encouraged students to integrate cross-cultural learning into their academic plans.

As an educational anthropologist, Dr. Shultz has focused his research and publications on sociolinguistics, multiculturalism, diversity, and internationalization in higher education. Since receiving a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Master of Education from Harvard University, and a Doctor of Education from Harvard, he has co-edited three academic volumes, and co-authored The Counselor as Gatekeeper: Social Interaction in Interview, which has become a must-read book in the field of Interactional Sociolinguistics.

Dr. Shultz’s commitment to enhancing the University community and curriculum for his students earned him awards both within and outside of Arcadia, including Professor of the Year.
