Kimberly Casimir ’18, Amanda Hulse ’17, and Allyson Naiken ’17, recipients of the 2016 Vira I. Heinz Program for Women in Global Leadership scholarship, will present on their international experiences at Politics Around the World on Tuesday, Nov. 29 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. in Grey Towers Castle Rose Room.

Each student will examine the political structures and limitations of their respective countries, offering round table discussions and Q&A sessions on human rights, freedom, and injustice. Dr. Maryam Deloffre, assistant professor of Historical and Political Studies, will serve as a guest speaker, illustrating differences between the voting processes of each country.

“We each dealt with some form of politics while abroad,” said Casimir. “I studied in Shanghai, China and took a political development class that inspired me to learn more about the political structure and compare what it feels like to live in a communist country versus the U.S.”

In addition to supporting international studies and leadership development, the Vira I. Heinz scholarship requires recipients to explore global issues through community engagement events at the conclusion of the program. While Casimir will focus on the political system in China, Hulse will discuss Brexit in light of her experiences in London, and Naiken will examine freedom in the Netherlands.

“[The Vira I. Heinz Program] is about women who lead all over the world and help others have an open mind, and we hope to accomplish that,” said Casimir. “We want our guests to be informed about what is happening in other countries.”
