For Ages 15 and above

Summer Art WorkshopsRegister

Immerse yourself in Arcadia University’s non-credit Summer Art Workshops! Through a range of projects in varying arts subjects, you'll be encouraged to develop your own ideas, enhance your creative skills and knowledge while building a body of work for your portfolio.

You will be guided through a variety of creative approaches and processes by experienced faculty including exercises in the areas of art, design, drawing, photography and 3-D (jewelry and/or sculpture). You will also be advised on the best way to showcase your work and develop your portfolio. Working in our well-equipped art and design studios will help to familiarize you with the equipment and resources used in creative arts. The experience will give you confidence in your creative abilities and strong preparation for your next level of creative arts study.

Program Goals
  • Gain a foundation and structure for learning inside and outside the classroom/studio.
  • Develop a broad set of critical, intellectual and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate understanding of defined design concepts and skill sets.

At the end of each weekly session, you will participate in critiques in which feedback will be given and received on your work in a group setting. Through critiques, you'll learn more about approaches, solutions, materials and other possibilities.

Build Your Portfolio

This program is also designed to strengthen your portfolio for college applications. If you are interested in feedback on your current portfolios—whether it is a general inquiry or for acceptance into Arcadia University’s Art and Design program—you may arrange to receive an official portfolio review at the end of your workshop session.

Each workshop will complete one project each week. If you take two workshops per day for four weeks, you will have eight completed pieces.

Morning Workshops, 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

2-D Mixed Media: This workshop will focus on developing individual projects based on elements of art such as line quality, value, composition, color, etc. Both descriptive and expressive aspects will be explored through various subjects and materials.

3-D Mixed Media: Explore three-dimensional design through the methodologies and principles on form and space relationships. This session will help you to assess aesthetic, conceptual and functional aspects of sculpture while exploring a variety of 3-D methods and materials such as metals, wood soapstone and plaster.

Afternoon Workshops, 1 – 4 p.m.

Drawing: Explore the fundamentals of drawing as a descriptive and expressive skill for all types of visual work, using a variety of materials, subjects and techniques. You'll gain analytical skills through direct observation of studio set ups, creating strong portfolio pieces such as a self-portrait, a bicycle and still life subjects.

B&W Darkroom Photography: Learn how to operate a professional SLR film camera, and how to develop and print your own B&W negatives and photographic prints. By the end of each week-long session, you'll have added a series of new prints to your growing portfolio. Instruction and guidance will be given on both technical and conceptual aspects of the process. This workshop is suitable for any experience level in photography, beginner to intermediate.
