Common Read Essay Contest

Competition Rules
  1. Eligibility: All first-year students at Arcadia University are eligible to participate.
  2. Submission:
    Submission: Submissions are due by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25, 2019
    Essays must be submitted online, below.
  3. Essay Format and Length:
    Essays should be 2-3 pages (no submissions longer than 3 pages will be accepted), typed, double spaced, with one-inch margins and 12-point font
    All essays should have a title
    The first page of the essay should list the writer’s name and Arcadia email address
  4. Award:
    The winner receives (1) the opportunty to personally meet and talk with the author at a special group reception, (2) a cash prize (for first place and honorable mention), and (3) public recognition from the First-Year Experience and the English Department. The award-winning essay will be eligible for inclusion in the Landman Library Digital Repository (ScholarWorks at Arcadia).
  5. Judging Criteria:

    Originality and depth of thought
    Clarity of expression
    Ability to make meaningful connections between the book and the broader world

  6. Judges:
    Essays will be read and evaluated by a panel of judges from the English Department and the First-Year Experience.
