Intern Philly Virtual Guest Speaker: Feeding the Philadelphia Immigrant Community - open to all students, faculty and staff

Wednesday, February 24, 2021 - 6:00pm to 7:00pm

February 24th 6-7pm EST |  Feeding the Philadelphia Immigrant Community (as well as some of the best food in the country)

Guest Speakers: Cristina Martinez & Ben Miller from South Philly Barbacoa

Zoom Meeting ID: 97766296364

Our guest speakers this Wednesday will be the incomparable Cristina Matinez and Ben Miller.  Together they operate South Philly Barbacoa, one of Bon Appetit’s best restaurants in the country and a 2020 James Beard nominee.  But that’s just the surface.  Ben and Cristina are tireless advocates for undocumented immigrant’s rights as well as food insecurity and inequality.  Together they have launched the community organization The People’s Kitchen which distributes over 1,200 meals a week through local non-profits and faith-driven charities and have provided over 33,000 meals to date. In addition to The People’s Kitchen, they have started the equity and justice group 215 People’s Alliance, worked with the Right2Work Dinner Series, and The Alliance For Undocumented Worker’s Rights.
As for the now famous South Philly Barbacoa itself?  Martinez has said the restaurant epitomizes everything that goes into her cuisine: community, diversity, respect, quality. “This is Mexico, this is barbacoa, this is Cristina Martinez, this is our culture,” she said via Miller. “It’s beautiful to see.”). Here is an example of what they’re about: South Philly Barbacoa does not cater to tourists or white-collar professionals. The restaurant opens only on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays at 5 a.m., when many immigrant workers are ending or beginning their work days, and it closes when the food is sold out.
