Information for Families and Their Students With Chronic and Persistent Mental Health Concerns
Students who are entering Arcadia University with a pre-existing mental health condition and treatment plan should plan ahead and identify resources prior to arriving on campus. Concerns such as medication management, continuity of care, and establishing new providers on and off campus are best to be discussed ahead of time to insure the student’s stability and academic success. We have found that it helps students and families to know what we can and cannot do to assist them.
What Counseling Services Can Do
Assist the student in the transition to Arcadia. Students and families can reach out to Counseling Services before arriving on campus to discuss the student’s mental health needs and the various options for support.
Provide case management support to those needing an off-campus treatment provider for chronic and persistent mental health concerns.
When the condition appears to be destabilizing, work with the student to identify the next steps.
Provide off-campus resources to assist in the overall management of mental health challenges. We maintain a comprehensive referral list.
What Counseling Services Cannot Do
Become the primary care provider when a student already has, or needs, an off-campus treatment team.
Provide serious medical stabilization in cases which require intense medical management or intensive long-term psychotherapy.
Provide psychiatric management without psychotherapy.
See a student more often than once a week. During a crisis period we may see a student more than once a week for a week or two based on the clinical assessment of the therapist.
Provide anyone, including families, information about the student without the student’s consent, unless the student is in imminent danger of hurting him/herself or someone else.
How to Maximize Your Student's Success
We have learned that helping families understand what we need from students in order to maximize success is very important.
To Facilitate Success, Students Should
Get medications filled prior to coming to campus and identify who will be providing medication management before they arrive on campus.
Maintain compliance with treatment recommendations as prescribed.
Become aware of warning signs that their condition is worsening.
Communicate with on-campus supports. On-campus supports may include RAs, Area Coordinator, Residence and Commuter Life Staff, Student Health or Counseling Services Staff, Learning Resource Network Staff, or Disability Support Services.
Be informed about the use of alcohol and other drugs and the impact on prescribed medications and mental health concerns.
Recognize that Counseling Services is not open 24/7. Daytime emergencies are triaged immediately. After hour emergencies are managed by Residence and Commuter Life Staff and Public Safety who are trained to handle these situations.
Be aware of the risks of abruptly changing or stopping prescribed medications without consulting with the prescribing physician.
Attend regularly scheduled appointments with treatment providers and follow treatment recommendations as prescribed.
