Shandell Receives Award from the American Theatre and Drama Society

July 8, 2014 Purnell Cropper

Dr. Jonathan Shandell, associate professor of theater arts, recently received the American Theatre and Drama Society (ATDS)’s Publication Subvention Award for his essay “Turning ‘Negroes’ into ‘People’ on Stage: Anna Lucasta in Harlem and on Broadway.”

ATDS, an organization of scholars and educators who dedicate their studies to American theatre and drama in all its variations, uses the Publication Subvention Award to “help individual authors offset costs not normally covered by publishers, such as illustrations, facsimiles, accompanying multimedia materials, and permissions.”

Shandell plans to use the $200 cash prize to support the publication of illustrations for his essay, which will appear in the anthology Experiments in Democracy: Interracial and Cross-Cultural Exchange in American Theatre and Performance, 1912-1945, which he is co-editing with the Dr. Cheryl Black of the University of Missouri.

On July 25, Shandell will receive his award at the ATDS annual meeting in Scottsdale, Ariz.
