In a Q&A, trustee Tom Johnston ’96, CEO of Dutch biotechnology company Mucosis, joins Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Kees Leenhouts to discuss how the company is developing safe vaccines to be administered intranasally or orally, instead of by needle.

"Eventually, scientists became familiar with mucosal vaccines or nasal vaccines, which looked like a sensible way to go," say Johnston and Leenhouts. "However, it's more difficult to raise immune responses using those vaccines, and the scientists turned to intramuscular vaccines or parenteral vaccines, which are mainly designed to raise systemic immune responses. Now, however, there is a clearer understanding of the importance of the mucosal immune system and a renewed interest in the use of other administration routes."
