Daniel DiPrinzio, director of communications, published “Goodbye, Exclamation Point” in the Aug. 9 Philadelphia Inquirer. The editorial was reprinted in the Chicago Tribune, Tampa Bay Times, and outlets in Georgia, Iowa, Massachusetts, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and Vermont.
In the editorial, DiPrinzio discusses the overuse of the exclamation mark in email communications:
The office workers of America are guilty of a grievous sin. I've done it, and chances are, so have you. If you haven't, you most certainly have had it done to you.
I'm talking, of course, about the gluttonous use of the exclamation point in a work e-mail. A damnable act, for sure, but salvation is within reach.
