On Sunday, Nov. 12, the Arcadia University student organization Melanin in Action (MIA) will help lead an effort to collect donations for Puerto Rico as part of Hurricane Maria relief. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., community members can drop off items listed at the University’s “Resident Parking Lot” (Lot 12), located immediately to the right after turning off of Church Road.
Items being collected include soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, diapers and baby wipes, deodorant, hand sanitizer, feminine products, can openers, peanut butter, plastic and surgical gloves, new socks, batteries, flashlights, non-perishable snacks in the original packaging, and first aid items. Clothing, water, and perishable items will not be accepted.
Items can also be dropped off outside Easton Hall 334, Taylor Hall 107B, and Brubaker Hall 217. An off campus location is also available at Imhotep Institute Charter School at 6201 N. 21st Street, Philadelphia, 19138. Please contact Michelle Wilson-215-438-4140 Ext. 113 for an appointment.
The donations will be dispersed across the island by Unidos por Puerto Rico, which specializes in delivering goods to mountainous locations on the island that are harder to reach.
The event, held in conjunction with Barclay’s Bank, is also sponsored by the Black Male Development Symposium, the Young Democratic Socialist of America, Imhotep Charter High School and Wanner’s Transport and Delivery Service. MIA also has collaborated with the University’s Pan-African Studies, Gateway to Success/Act 101 Program, Black Awareness Society, POWER, the Latino Association and The Black Alumni Association of Arcadia University.
