Arcadia University Launches Micro-Credential on Gender and Sexual Diversity

By Caitlin Burns | June 9, 2016

Arcadia University’s School of Education has opened enrollment for its unique online graduate micro-credential program, Gender and Sexual Diversity for Educators and Leaders, which focuses on instituting safe and welcoming environments for students with diverse sexualities and gender expressions, with a particular focus on gender nonconforming and transgender children, youth, and adults. Delivered fully online, it is one of the only micro-credentials in the country focused on gender and sexual diversity.

The program encompasses three threads: conceptual frameworks for gender and sexual diversity for educators and leaders research based best practices, emerging theory and praxis for gender nonconforming students, and pedagogical applications within the team’s specific educational contexts.

The School of Education at Arcadia University encourages participants from educational and community organizations to register as a team. Students will work together to complete a needs assessment and develop, implement, and evaluate an action plan for their own organizational context. Individual students are also welcome to register; priority will be given to teams.

Some examples of participating organizations and team members could include:

  • PreK-12 team represented by principals, guidance counselors, teachers, members from central administration, and family members or allies of LGBTQ students
  • College and university team with representatives from President’s counsel, Provost counsel, students affairs, health and counseling, faculty, as well as LGBTQ students
  • Community and religious organizations with representatives from leadership, members of the organization, and members of the LGBTQ community.

Students can further their expertise on this topic by adding two more graduate courses and completing a Graduate Certificate program. The Certificate can be used toward a Modular Master’s in Education at Arcadia, an individualized master’s degree program that combines two certificate programs, foundation courses, and a culminating experience.
