Dr. Baker-Doyle is an Associate Professor of Education and the Director of Master's Degree and Certificate Programs in the School of Education at Arcadia University. Her research centers on teacher professional development, social network theory, and community engagement, especially in urban schools and communities. She is the author of The Networked Teacher: How New Teachers Build Social Networks for Professional Support, published by Teachers College Press and Transformative Teachers: Teacher Leadership and Learning in a Connected World, published by Harvard Education Press. Dr. Baker-Doyle conducts workshops and academic talks for diverse audiences of teachers and scholars about her research on teachers’ social support networks, and has worked with national organizations such as the National Writing Project and the Children’s Literacy Initiative. At Arcadia, Dr. Baker-Doyle initiated and currently coordinates the Connected Learning Certificate, an innovative program for developing 21st century learning opportunities, networks, and experiences for educators. She teaches courses in literacy with an emphasis on designing field-based partnerships and learning experiences. Previously, she has taught courses in service-learning and urban education. She has a special interest in the use of connected technologies and multi-media to support student learning and community-building. Kira is also known as one-half of “John & Kira’s”, a nationally-known gourmet chocolate company, which she helped her husband to start in 2000. She and her husband won the Eddy Award for Commitment to Public Education in 2011 as a result of their work collaborating with school-based urban garden programs.
